Argh. Preop day 1

Recommended Posts

:faint:Day one preop... I'M HUNGRY! Please tell me it gets better than this. I'm pretty sure I'm actually hungry and it's not head hunger but I think that could be a part of it too. 1 day of preop in... 18 more to go.:cry

I know everyone is different, but I think the first couple of days were the hardest. I had a headache and I felt dizzy and I was starving! haha I am now 8 days complete and it doesn't seem near as bad. I dont know what your pre op diet consists of. Mine is basically 2 high Protein Meal Replacement shakes, a piece of fruit and a yogurt during the day and then for dinner I get to splurge with 4 oz of lean meat and 2 slices of low cal bread plus 1 cup of veggies. I think my pre op diet is a little more liberal then some but I find it very doable! I find sipping on hot tea helps curb my hunger too. Keep strong! It will be worth it!

Thanks! My surgeon doesn't have a specific preop diet he requires ppl to do - he basically said don't gain any more weight and if you lose some that would be great. So he recommended something like a slimfast 2 x a day Portion Control type meal like a slim fast or small piece of lean meat and cup of veggies for dinner. So thats what I am doing and a piece of fruit to snack or a slim fast snack bar, or a piece of turkey pepperoni (40cal, 2 g fat and 6 g Protein for 1 stick). I've decided to keep my calories at or under 1000 a day and I'm sure I will lose weight with that.

I think I will head to the store tonight and pick up some tea as I believe we are fresh out. Thanks for the suggestion!

 Well done on your 8 days woo hoo :)

I agree. It is hardest in the beginning. I am finishing day 8 out of 10. Keep the Protein intake high and consistent and drink lots of fluids and you will be fine.

I'm on Day 1 of a 10-day Optifast shake Pre-Op Phase (I'm avoiding the word, "diet").

I get 5 Optifast shakes and 1 OptiFast bar per day.

The bar is repulsive. Yeesh! I'm confident that some skinny person devised it to torture fat people. The shakes are 'okay', 6-8 ounces. But need to be consumed 'immediately' (per the instructions) for 'best taste'. I drink them 'immediately', but they still aren't going to win any contests for shake-of-the-year!

Two more shakes today... (total of 960 calories if I can choke down the other half of the snack bar)... and then nine more days 'til surgery.

I find myself going from excited to nervous to eager to anxious to... you get the picture.

I hope I've made the right decision.

Welcome WCFG! Take it one day at a time and don't think about how far you have to go. You can do it.

I used to live in Mission Viejo. You anywhere near there?

my doc made me buy these shakes from his office and let me buy only one week at a time. he told me not to gain any weight and why it was important for me to lose during this time......I have spoken to their office 2x and they have yet to ask me how I am doing. I have only done it for one day and today I went out ot dinner with my family...I will do the last two days of pure liquids as my surgery is on monday. I think it varies from doc to doc, but I cant see him cancelling the surgery because I didnt do the preop diet...I figure I have plently of days of shakes ahead of me....,and ppl pls dont question my commitment...you all know EXACTLY what I am feeling

Hey there CMJ... I ended the day yesterday and started the day today pretty anxious and was questioning my decision. Surprisingly, as the day went on I've become more relaxed and find myself looking forward to the big day again. I'm sure I'll flip-flop a few times, but it sure is good to have encouragement and reinforcement from the folks here. I'll be happy when I've had success and can be one of those dishing out that happy thoughts!

BTW, I'm in San Diego.< /p>

Hey WCFG---My surgery is the day after yours, and I'm on the SAME diet, except it's 4 shakes, 2 bars---which are gritty but at least you get to CHEW something. I've lost 8 lbs. since 1/1, and no I don't exercise but will be picking up an exercise bike tomorrow--bad knees, can't walk much.

So the good part is that the Optifast will take some weight off preop--hang in there, I'm starving along with you!!

I am going back and forth also, one minute I am excited and the next I am thinking morbid thoughts. It sucks I just want to do wake up and recover. Then the true hard part begins. I want to live healthy.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
