I want to have a piece of cake

Recommended Posts

Not sure my feelings on this. I keep saying i'm going to treat myself to a piece of cake christmas eve, but then I think I shouldn't even be thinking about cake. Had my surgery Nov 19th down 28 pounds.

If anyone has any input, please share with me.

Thanks

Having a cookie or a piece of cake doesn't make you gain weight. Having a steady diet of cake and Cookies does. If you feel that you are always denying yourself and punishing yourself, you will probably fail at your weight loss attempts. If you change your lifestyle so it does not include high fat or high sugar foods on a regular basis, but have a treat on special occasions, you will feel much better about your diet and be more successful.

My daughter knows a bandster who has lost over 250 pounds. One day a week she lets herself have anything she wants to eat.

So just don't eat the whole *#&$* cake and you will be fine!

If the issue is about your post-op diet (should you be on mushies?) then don't have the cake or, as someone suggested, moisten it with milk or icecream and stir.

If you don't have the cake now, you'll stubbornly make up for it later. Now if the issue is that you think that you shouldn't be eating cake because people who have weight loss surgery are irrational for even considering it after going to great expense and trauma, then I have another opinion (I'm verbose today- sorry).

Some bandsters go on diets and count calories. Maybe it works for them but I just read posts about a bunch of people on a diet and beating themselves up when they transgress and have wheat. It reminds me too much of failed diets. I don't buy into that mentality anymore.

Maybe certain personality type (left-brained) concentrate on the calories-in/calories burned and the scientific side but out personalities always get in the way. That's why we got fat.

I'm glad I'm not one of them. That's not why I got banded. It just drives me nuts if I try to count calories eaten and calories burned. I don't want to think about and plan cake a week in advance.

I just focus on choosing healthy food with the nutrients I need to get through the day and the rest falls into place. I don't feel guilty if I eat chocolate but sometimes I question whether it was the best choice to reach my weight loss goals.

I say have the cake. Cakes shouldn't have a special power. They are just sitting there being cake. They're not sinful and, as someone said above, it's only a regular diet of cake that will get you in trouble.

I agree with you 1000% ! I do not get going on a diet after having surgery , for me perosnally , diets do not work because of the restrictions they put on you , lets face its as minimial as they are I have enough restriction placed on me now with the band. I tracked calories right after surgery just to make sure I was eating ENOUGH. I do not count calories, protien , ect.

IF I want a piece of cake at a party , christmas, ect I eat it . I do NOT limit myself . I eat what i want . As you can tell from my signature it works for me, Im down almost 60 pds ! I have adjusted my eating habits since surgery , i eat better, eat healthier!

I don't think we are aiming for a diet, we are aiming for normal eating habits. Normal people and naturally thin people have a piece of cake sometimes.

Isn't it odd how we don't really know what normal eating is? I still think about my own thinking of food and I have to stop and think, is this considered "normal" or not? ;o)

Today I bought a brownie from the bakery. I ate about 1/8th of it and pitched the rest. To me, that's normal. I don't do it often, I'm not gaining, I'm maintaining, so what's the big deal?

People eat holiday food on holidays, I think it is okay for us too, don't you agree?

Now, if you are a sugar addict and it will start a huge month long binge... no, avoid it. But if you can eat one piece and walk away from it and not start a carb thing that lasts for days then go for it.

That's the thing I'd be worried about! I'm not a big fan of cake in particular, but I have to be wary of foods that "trigger" a desire for more of the same. chocolate in any form comes to mind!

I used to work with a very skinny woman who had the ability to eat one "rectangle" of a Hershey bar and put away the rest of it. I would regard her with total and utter amazement. I was not born with that ability, unfortunately! LOL!

I guess if you were always capable of having an occasional piece of cake then go for it! If you think it'll lead to a total breakdown of your new healthy eating habits, I'd think twice about it. :biggrin1:

Was in a cafe last weekend and some young, thin tourists came in for coffee. They asked for a brownie with ice-cream and 4 spoons. They split it.

My mother (who was eating a whole brownie at the time) and I looked at each other and thought, "Aaaaah, that's why we're fat and they're not." I'm sure they enjoyed their shared brownie much more than anyone ever did with a tray of them in one sitting.

I totally relate. I was banded 11/27 an up until yesterday ( we had family over for the holiday) I have been using total willpower and convincing myself that i might get sick if I ate something not on the "approved" post op diet. We also have not had much food in the house, so sticking to the post op list has been easier.

But yesterday, I caved and tried a few new things. I did not eat a lot by any stretch of the imagination.

Had one piece of shrimp, one meatball and about five pieces of ziti. I had three small bites of cheesecake. I could have eaten much more, but didn;t.

the problem now is that now I know I can eat those things and not get sick or stuck or pb or anything, so I'm afraid I'll stray even more.

Next fill is 1/3/08 and I hope I get some restriction soon b/c the willpower that has been getting me through until now is fading fast!

I have 1.5 pounds to go to get under 200 and I really want to get there by Jan 1.

I'm 56, short, not very active and therefore a slow loser. I don't want to screw this up.

Anyone else feel like this? :faint:

If im out and i feel like getting a dessert , normally one of my kids will get one and I will take a bite or 2 off it and thats it. That's IF I have room left after dinner. Typically though dessert has to be "Planned" for , so i save room LOL

but If i want something I will just take bites off of some one elses now

Teamcarey - 1 piece of cake is ok - it is real life - it is what normal eating people do - it's not that one piece that adds 5 lbs - its the 2nd 3rd or whole damn thing. If you have the cake take a extra long walk - when I have a treat I pay myself back by exercising a little more.

Exercise is $$$ in the bank - it allows you to have a treat now and then

Good Luck & Merry Christmas...

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
