Can not eat after surgery

Recommended Posts

Good morning! I have had gastric bypass and my surgery went well which was done 20 years ago. I have had health issues cone up as I get older but hopefully nothing to worry about. My brother had gastric bypass in October 2022 and he cant eat. He vomits are not even due to food but any gastric contents that he has in his stomach. He literally has not even a teaspoon of food but that still upsets his stomach. Drinking any liquids is as bad as trying to eat. He is pretty much skin and bones at this point. He has taken every over the counter medication and even prescriptions do not help. He has had medical test that show nothing and he has become desperate as to hos current condition. He was a vibrant man before and now he has become this sickly man that looks like an frail older man. Does anyone have any suggestions on how he can keep his food down or how to resolve this problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you and have a great day!

That's when I had surgery and I can pretty much eat whatever I want. Is he in contact with his surgeon's office? He might need IV nutrition if he can't eat or drink.

Thank you for your comment. Yes he has been to his surgeon and he says he needs to expand the pouch but if he cant eat/drink that will not happen. At this point all he does is try to work and sleep. He has received one IV infusion but he got sick even with that. It is like his stomach is producing so much gastric fluids because thats all that he vomits. All we can do at this point is try to figure out how to get any nutrients for him.

He needs to go back to the surgeon and demand the dr to look into why this is happening. There has got to be a reason he cant eat. If that surgeon wont do anything he need to go to a different one.

I would definitely try to get a second opinion then. I had a PICC line in my chest when I was pregnant because I could not tolerate any food or liquids. That was the only way to get nutrition in.

I really wonder if they checked for a bowel obstruction.

As far as gastric fluids, I'd be surprised if there wasn't something that couldn't be done for that. I'm going to be on carafate for who knows how long because PPIs on their own don't control my reflux.

I hope your brother gets some relief soon.

If he hasn’t had imaging or an endoscopy done yet that would be my next step. If the provider refuses, tell him to ask the provider to document the refusal and reason. Good luck to him

there's something very wrong there. I'd go back to my surgeon, too.

Hello!

he really needs to see a doctor!

I am less than 90 days out, and I am tolerating food. Some foods I can’t, and if they upset my stomach a heating pad will help with stomach spasms and I have stomach spasms pills that were given to me. But most thing my stomach will tolerate.

I hope he gets to a good doctor to fix the issue.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
