Starting Two Week Pre-op Diet

Recommended Posts

Januray 08 Banders - Here we go.

My surgery is Jan 3rd and I start my pre op liquid diet on Thurs. This is my second surgery date, and second stint with the two week liquid diet.

My first surgery was canceled Aug 29th, the day before surg.

I am here to tell you, that if I can do the two week liquid diet twice anyone can do it. I am looking forward to a exciting, lighter New Year. I am so excited to be able to follow everyones progress. I know we all will do great. We just have to stick together and remember we have a new " TOOL" to help us achieve our healthy goals.

Good luck to all.

Lois :clap2:

Good luck Wowox and 4jin with your pre-op diets. I start mine on the 27th December for my surgery on 10th January. I am feeling positive for the surgery and can't wait to want to go clothes shopping, and not feel so bloated all the time.

Starting day 4 of my pre op liquid diet, and yesterday was a killer, have the hunger pains this morning so this is probably my body adjusting.

I am glad I am at work, where people know I am in this phase with the operation coming up, otherwise I would be eating the frozen meat in my refrigerator at home right now.

Day 5. Surprise, surprise. Only had a smoothie and a slim fast so far. Not really hungry, no grumbling stomach, could it be its getting adjusted and the next 10 days will fly by?

Bad, Bad day. Wanted to eat meat, and lots of it. So instead, had an entire quart of broth with mixed veggies. Now I feel like I am swishing around. Not enough Protein in today, but if I didn't have it in meat, it wasn't going to happen. Thankfully, I go back to work tomorrow.

Well I ate a sleeve of Ritz crackers. Yep, even when I was eating alot, that got me this fat in the first place, I never ate a sleeve of Ritz Crackers. Decided I need the Protein after all so had a Carnation Instant Breakfast, and thats been it since 10pm.

Ginger hang in there, its all up and downs. But, after reading other threads, its the same way when the band goes in. Everyday is different.

I don't know if this will help, but my doc explained that the goal of the pre-op diet is to reduce the size of the liver by eliminating glycogen stores. We do this by eliminating sugar--not just sweets, but virtually all carbs. If you must supplement your liquid diet, I'd say stick with lean Protein. That will help fill you up and will not add sugar to your system.

I know it's hard and I'll be in the same boat in just a few days. You can do it--this too shall pass! Merry Christmas!

Thanks Jim. My doc said the liquid diet was to defat the liver, and in all the nutritional requirements, it only said to go Lo Carb. I have to have 1000 calories a day, at least 50g Protein and no more than 35g fat. So never realized that the Ritz were high carb.

Hi Chrisann--

I am no expert, but I think breads, crackers, Cookies, white rice, corn (starch), etc. are indeed carbs that your body (liver)will break down and process as sugar. "White flour" type stuff is a no-no. Besides reducing liver size, once we "detox" from sugar (I understand that takes a few days), blood sugar stabilizes and we experience less hunger and fewer "spikes." That's the theory anyway, as I understand it. I have been on very low carb diets in the past and they worked remarkably well short-term. Unfortunately, I love carbs (not sweets so much, but any kind of starch) and the weight piled back on as I began to eat them again. I'm counting on the band to help me restrict my massive over-consumption. Jim

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
