ESG Surgery 03/14/23!

Recommended Posts

'm so excited (nervous, anxious and scared too) that my ESG is in 15 days!! 🙌 I have put having WLS for soOOOo long, it's very surreal that it is so close. I have been stockpiling Protein Shakes, powders, Soups and have all my supplements and medications in order. I feel as though I am ready for this but am still unsure how I will be able to abide by the strict Protein intake for the 45 days as it (and I"m sure all protocols require everyone) me to drink 8oz of protein every other hour from 8am to 9pm and Water on the off hour. I work in an office setting that doesn't allow me to have food liquids at my desk (secure location) and have to excuse myself to the break room for food. Breaks are not every hour and I can't imagine I can guzzle the Protein Drinks in less than 5 mins. I will have to be creative?! It's going to be a LONG 45 days! I'm thinking of using the protein waters, has anyone every had any of them? Any suggestions on any of them? Thanks! 😀

I like the Premier Protein Clear, they have tropical punch and peach, they are pretty easy to get down. Congratulations!

I’m right there with you! My ESG is the day after yours. I haven’t bought too much stuff as I’m not sure what I will feel like eating/sipping afterward. I’m thinking room temperature hydration Water and unflavoured Protein water to start?

Surgery was yesterday- man oh man- was not expecting the amount of pain and pressure today. Accompanied by bloating and nausea. Add to that- 3 feet of snow and no power! My throat is so sore as well. Crushing pills for the foreseeable future is not going to be fun- they all taste like, well horrible.. But- it’s done and I’m on the road to recovery and success! No regrets! @Mrs Roz - hope you’re doing well!

@L. Knight I’m doing better! - Thank you for asking. The heartburn has been pretty bad but I switched my Protein Shakes and that seemed to help a lot! I’m getting all my meds in and have been managing to get all my Protein requirements and Fluid intakes in as well. It’s quite a struggle and I’m not sure how I’ll be able to manage it going back to work next week!?? Any suggestions?

@kmacintosh glad to hear you are doing better. As far as work and being able to get your Protein in during work hours, could you pull your manager to the side and explain to them bc of a medical procedure you had, you need to be able to drink a diet supplement at your desk during the day.

@kmacintosh I go to have mines done on 3/24. I will definitely keep this forum updated with my progress hopefully you will do thx same. As far as your pills can you pre-crush them up and put them in one of those pill cases.

@L. Knight You know what, I hadn’t thought of that, only because I’m afraid of losing more of the pill “dust” since some of it is already lost in the crusher. But you make a valid point! Today has been a better day- still going good on the Fluid intake- had a Protein Soup (16g) was horrid tasting but manageable. Not much of a celebratory birthday dinner but you manage!? Lol

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
