Attack of the Stomach Flu

Recommended Posts

Yep...I got it this weekend. I hadn't been feeling all that great for several days. Then I went out to dinner and started to feel a little queasy...but I just thought, I won't eat any popcorn at the movie and I"ll be fine. Well, half way through the movie "Wedding Date", they start talking about throwing up and well, that was all I could take. I calmly walked to the bathroom and barely made it into the stallbefore it started.

Holy crap, with the first spasm I thought I was going to pull my band right off my stomach and throw it up. It hurt like an SOB, let me tell you! Then I kept throwing up, but nothing came up. It was horrid!!! After I stopped dry heaving, I burped the loudest burp that has ever come out of my body. I sounded like a thirteen year old boy after drinking a can of coke. Anyway...I ended up on the toilet with it coming out the other end...

As soon as I could, I got my sister out of the movie and had her drive me to the hospital. On the way there, I called the Resident on Call for my surgeon. I had another round of heaving and it seriously hurt like someone had reached into my gut and was pulling out my stomach. The resident called in to the ER so they new to expect me, and told the doctor there to administer some anti-nausea meds. The resident also kept telling my sister that I shouldn't worry that I'm hurting my band, that after a year and four months it can take some vomitting. That made me feel a little better.

When we got to the ER, the nurses had no clue what I was talking about, and I was so glad the resident had talked to the doctor because I don't think they would have treated me any differently and given me the anti-nausea meds. The meds started working right away and I felt much better.

The ER doc perscribed some supositories to use when I got home, and however gross it is to use them, they worked.

I'm on liquids for another day or so..but I'm feeling much better after sleeping all day yesterday and keeping my fever at bay with some children's liquid tylenol.

I sure hope no one get's the stomach flu...if you do, make sure to get some anti-nausea meds quickly!!! I'm going to keep some in my purse and in my medicine cupboard from now on.

Awww Megan... I'm so sorry you are sick and had to go through all of that! There is absolutely nothing worse than the stomach flu! I'm glad you are feeling better and this makes me feel like calling my surgeon for a "just in case" supply of suppositories!

Wow, Megan -

That sounds absolutely awful, and one of a bandster's worse nightmares. Thank goodness you are organized enough to have the numbers you needed at your fingertips, and got yourself help quickly.

(((hugs)))

Poopy Megan, that sounds awful! Could you share with us the kind of anti-nausea meds you have? Are they over-the-counter? I'm going to get some next time I'm at the store. That's frightening, and I'm really glad you feel better. xo

Meagan sorry to hear you have been under the weather...You handled it beautifully doing what you did. Very smart of you!

Phenergan suppositories do work. I have had some on hand ever since banding. My PCP prescribes them for me in the event I get the flu. So far I have been lucky. I was just told by my PCP that he just saw the first real flu victim this past week and that it has officially arrived in Orange County. I am prepared

I'm glad you are feeling better...

Please somebody pray for me as I have just received my eight year old son home from school with All of the above. I am with lysol in one hand and clorox wipes in the other!

Glad your feeling better Megan...

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm feeling much better today and ate real food. I was scared I'd be too swollen to eat but I guess having two days on Clear liquids did the trick. I did get some nasty trapped gas (TMI, I know, but this is a stomach flu thread) so I took some Gas X and that "went away" if you get my drift.

The suppository the Dr. perscribed is called "Tigan (generic form)".

Kimberly- I sure would suggest calling your doctor and getting a perscription just in case, especially when you KNOW you've been exposed.

Once again, thanks everyone! Now go get your suppositories!!! Hee hee...

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
