For everyone on real food, how’s it going? I just started this week and it’s been interesting. I still find myself gravitating to soft foods but I definitely am careful about speed. I ate Breakfast too fast the other day and I had a vomit moment before taking my daughter to school. The amount of food actually eaten is a ridiculously small amount - it’s so bizarre! My plan is not specific at all on what to eat so it’s a lot of trial and error….what are some of your meals like?

I'm not On real food yet, not even on soft foods yet but I wanted to say I've seen a few people saying there plans aren't specific about what to eat or when or different things. If you type in "ohsu bariatric handbook" into Google, there's a pdf file you can download, (I'll try to put a link in) for after beriatric surgery and they give examples of times, food, and alot of different guides to help..... it's actually the program I'm working with and I love how detailed they are about different things

I am on soft foods but have been doing well. I couldn't eat much today but I made eggs with chorizo and just gave it a small try, it didn't sit well, didn't matter how many times I chewed it. I find it so weird. Some days I am good to eat, others I can barely eat anything. I wonder if my nerves are repairing, and I am starting to feel it more. I literally had about 2 tbsp of liquidy cream of wheat today and about a half an egg. Other days I am much better. Drinking plenty of Protein Water and taking frog fuel.

Ok guys I swore to share the good the bad and the ugly so here goes… I have not been active in here much lately because I have been absolutely exhausted with work. I left work early to visit an iv bar yesterday! If you are weak and exhausted from lack of Vitamins just go do it trust me!!! It makes a huge difference! On top of that I have never been regular with the potty and that has gotten worse since surgery. So tonight I took it upon myself to take something to help out in that area. For the love of all things holy if you feel the need to go this route DO NOT TAKE THE DOSE RECOMMENDED ON THE BOX!!!! There are approximately 10 steps between my bed and my bathroom if in a hurry and I promise you I made it about 3 of those steps… I have managed to clean myself out and also managed to have the rest of the medication my stomach couldn’t handle come out the top side. So now I am laying in my bed contemplating my life choices and exactly how I might go about recovering from this horrific night… it is well past my bed time and I am terrified to go to sleep!!! Send prayers for my dumb self please!!!

Dulcilax! It’s says gentle laxative!!! My hind end says not so gentle! It hit me about like a Mac truck on the highway! We are talking shaking, nausea, irreparable damage to my toilet along with my pride! After two rounds of this with the second one not being anywhere near as horrific as the first I was so nauseated that I thought I would take the prescribed medication for that and it didn’t even make it down before it came back up! So my ears are currently the only orifice left unviolated at the moment!!

I'm still on soft foods until monday but what types of real food are you trying? Its so weird to be set free into the world of food without guidance, I feel like I'm going to be lost.

I just had my 1st meal outside of the house and I survived lol. I had an omelet with mushrooms and onions and it was awesome. I only ate a tiny amount but it was nice to feel normal and I actually love eating such small amounts. I don't feel the negative judgement that was probably all in my head to begin with but it still was nice.

I'm so sorry you had such issues!! I will take your advice and I won't try that brand for my Constipation. I had the opposite issue with taking milk of magnesia. I took the lowest dose and nothing so I waited another day and then took the highest dose and finally some relief but just barely. I hope you are feeling better! Thank you for sharing so that we can learn from your experiences.

It is definitely a brand that will get the job done! Just don’t take the recommended dose on the back. Take the children’s dose!

I’m new here and had gastric sleeve on September 10th. I am still having a hard time getting all my Water in and enough Protein. I just don’t get hungry and can only hold very small amounts. Anyone else have that problem?

Yes, so I drink Protein Water and used both LiquaCel gel and Frog Fuel to get it up. My water is still under but I can get it to about 40 ounces, so getting there.

I've suggested this to others as well, but this is the after beriatric surgery book my hospital gives us and it's amazing, I was so surprised to see so many people going into different stages lost about what to eat, so I definitely suggest it to anyone who doesn't have specific instructions from there doctors, it even has a shopping list page for entering the soft food stage, definitely worth a look, it's a pdf you can get from Google I put in a link

I'm still on purees, but starting next week, here's some of the stuff on my menu for soft food stage:

  • Butternut Squash Bisque w/ Meatballs
  • Meatloaf, Green Beans, Sautéed Squash
  • Slow-Cooker Buffalo chicken Meatballs
  • Broccoli cheese Soup (add unflavored Protein powder)
  • Taco bowl
  • Moroccan Shakshuka With Lentils
  • Mapo tofu

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
