Trouble eating food after bypass

Recommended Posts

Hi, I had bypass surgery on 18th of May and have been struggling since.

I am having trouble with food, most food to be honest.

I get a stuck feeling in my chest, sometimes it comes up sometimes it doesnt.

It burns as it is going down and I dont know why. I have followed the rule and transitioned from clear Fluid, fluid, puree, soft and now solids

Some days I can eat a cracker and cheese, other days I cant get down mashed pumpkin. Its frustrating and i'd like to know if anyone else has these issues.

I'm having issues with the toilet as well which is causing me pain in my left side and bloating in my tummy.

Any help or advice is appreciated because i'm in all sorts of pain

if by toilet issues you mean Constipation, that's a common issue. Many of us take a capful of Miralax every day to keep on top of it (others take stool softeners or magnesium tablets).

as for the food, I'd check with your clinic.

Hey there! I had my surgery on May 23rd and have had the same issue with eating. It’s been awful, but I’ve been told it is normal and that everyone is different. I got to the point where I was afraid to try new foods because I didn’t want to feel sick. I know it’s hard and frustrating but patience is key. And don’t forget that this is your journey, I would become even more stressed when other patients said they were already eating solids at my stage. I try to focus more on my liquids to avoid feeling weak throughout the day.The foods that go down the best for me are banana and refried Beans. You’re not alone and I hope you find something that doesn’t make you feel sick.

Hey surgery twin, I had my bypass on May 18th too! I struggle with sharp pain like my esophagus is clogged, right after eating food that's too dry or chewy. I find I am mostly still in the soft food stage. A huge portion of my diet is greek yogurt and cottage cheese, which I have to eat incredibly slowly. Literally one spoonful at a time and then a long pause in between bites to make sure my stomach is not going to cause any drama for me. I think with many bypass patients, it can be a long healing process to get to the point where we can eat most foods comfortably.

I had surgery June 7th and I know that "stuck" feeling. I find that tapping(and sometimes pounding) on my chest helps. It causes me to burp and allows room for the food. It's definitely a miserable feeling.

Usually when I get the stuck feeling I wasn't paying attention to what I was eating and ate too fast or didn't chew it enough or took too big a bite. It seldom happens at home but has happened a few times since I returned to work. I get caught up talking to my co-workers and stop paying attention to what and how I'm eating. I stop eating when that happens. It's just not worth risking more getting jammed.

Hi Layla,

I saw your post from earlier this year. I'm at the same place you were. I'm 7 weeks out and it seems everything I eat make me nauseous for a couple hours. Sounds like you might have been similar? I was wondering if you are still having issues or if you have been able to move up to regular food at this point and feel good? I hope you have but any information would be hepful to me as I'm starting to wonder if I have a stricture or something.

Thanks!

Laura

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
