gastric bypass for reflux

Recommended Posts

Hey I had gastric bypass for reflux (5/13/22) as I was just on the side pushing it for weight loss too. Is anyone else here for this reason? Also, because I didn't go through the normal bariatric process beforehand, I don't know what the follow-up should look like either. I saw my surgeon 2 weeks post op and now not til 3 months with nothing in between. No nutritionist, no therapist, no nothing. Is this common?

Hello Jelani,

I primarily had bypass for weight loss but I am so excited to no longer have to take my acid reflux medication. Even if your surgery was primarily for acid reflux you still need some guidance on how to transition as your new pouch matures. I recommend seeking out a Bariatric Nutritionist to start and consider a therapist as well to support you.

YES! I had a RYN for the same reason over 4 years ago. I had zero insurance hoops to go through. My surgeon is the leading lung replacement doc in my state. He told me to get all of my info from the internet!!!! He didn’t have me do any kind of pre-op diet, I did that on my own. I also had to push him to order a colon prep kit to clean me out the day before.
I was approved in less then 3 months!

What helped me a lot was a nutritionist provided by my insurance company (Cigna). I spoke with her several times before & a whole lot after.
I have found this forum & some FB groups very helpful. I also read a couple of book just so I could get info from one source instead of an overload of internet stuff to find my way through.
Please feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Thank you all for your comments. I was feeling a little lost and stranded by my surgeon and am just trying to figure out how much I can eat at one time. I still don't fully recognize fullness cues and am so so so struggling with no liquid until half hour after. OMG!

Hey! I had the SASI (mini GB plus partial gastrectomy) also for my GERD. I’ve been following up with my primary and GI as my surgeon’s in another country anyway. My reflux got worse for the first month and now 2 months out I’ve been able to stop my reflux medicine! Such a blessing!!

If you feel you need to see the surgeon sooner I would just call their office and tell them you need an appointment. Your paying for it so they shouldn’t care. You may also benefit quite a bit from seeing a nutritionist.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
