Revision after only a year of Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi, I had my gastric sleeve in March 22,21. My recovery was great and I didn’t had any pain or complications at all. I have lost like 60lbs so far. The problem is I have severe GERD. Since the day of my surgery I been taking PPI, now twice a day . Few days ago I had my one year visit with my surgeon and I he suggested that I should do a revision because taking the PPI long term is not ideal and he said that small percent of patients with gastric sleeve end up with severe GERD and I was one of them. That the only cure is the revision. I think is too soon but the regurgitation in the middle of the night are a nightmare to the point that I have to sleep sitting down. Have anyone one in here had a revision so soon? Sorry for my English is not my first language.

Mine took a few years to develop after the sleeve. Even then, I kept switching different PPIs, H2 blockers for a few years after that. I recently had the revision to RNY this past August. I'm sorry that I waited so long to have the revision. The revision helped me a lot. Better sleep due to no severe gerd keeping me up, physically it feels the same as the sleeve but no gerd, and I have far better weight control. I'm sorry you are having to go through this. Most don't get this side effect of the sleeve but unfortunately we both did.

I had an Uper GI test today and I have a Small sliding hiatal hernia with Schatzki ring. I will see the surgeon on May 31. We will discuss what is the best option for me.

I hope you get good information from the surgeon and begin a pathway to revision and improved health!

GERD sucks, I suffered with it for years and I'm awaiting revision from Band to Bypass now.

Best wishes!

@bypassingMyPhatAss thank you! Do you have a surgery date for your revision?

My case is going for review next Thursday so I'm hoping for a date some time after that. Maybe late May or June.

No but this is your body not mine and if you can't sleep lying down I'd imagine you'd want that fixed asap. RNY is a low pressure system that may give you a better chance at fixing GERD.

You totally right, I had an appointment with the dietitian today and she said that everything I’m doing to avoid the reflux is good and that the surgery will definitely help. Now I have to wait until May 31 to see the surgeon and see what he says.

I had a revision at 8 months after sleeve for a hiatal hernia of almost my entire gastric sleeve causing gerd which was so bad I had hiccups from the time I woke up until I went to bed. Life is so much better after revision. I rarely get reflux now and no more hiccups.

Did you get the gastric bypass?

hey! how was your surgery, how are you feeling? I’m on the same boat trying to get the surgery. Same thing, GERD after sleeve, EGD showed an hernia and I want to get revision to bypass. My BMI is 31 and my fear is that my insurance won’t cover it 😢

How has your recovery been going after your revision from sleeve to the bypass? Are you happy with the outcome? Have you experienced any complications ?

I actually had a hiatal hernia of my sleeve which is what lead to my revision. I’m pretty happy with my results from it. The only complications I’ve had have stemmed from my uncanny ability to develop hernias leading to one of my mesentery followed by 2 more of my mesentery and intestines that lead to a small bowel obstruction with necrotic tissue after developing 2 seromas from the first mesentery hernia repair. Plus, I already had a hiatal hernia repaired when I had my sleeve (this is totally genetic for me- being hernia prone and is totally atypical of most revision surgery patients).

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
