Keeping your shakes fresh

Recommended Posts

Well just wondering if anyone has some advice on how to deal with keeping your Protein Shake fresh when it takes me an hour or more to get through it.

Like I was drinking one yesterday and left it out for an hour because my stomach was full and when I tried it again it tasted like a tire (no joke). I tried refrigerating it and it still tasted awful. Wasted shake! And we know how pricey they are. :(

What are some things you practice that keep your Protein Shakes fresh on days you need extra time to finish them?

Thanks!

It takes me 45 minutes to an hour to drink one but I haven't found them getting yucky. Do you use powder or pre-made? I use the premade GNC Lean shakes 25 g Protein swiss chocolate flavor.

This consistently happens with the ensure Protein Shakes. And then when I make my own they separate and taste weird. Made with Isopure and vanilla Protein Shake.
I also live in Florida so it's warm and humid indoors. Idk if that affects it.

Do you shake it up a lot? I could never get used to the grittiness of Protein Powder made into a shake, so I use the pre-made, unless I'm going to use the blender and mix with frozen fruit.

I agree with using a Yeti cup or something similar.

I tend to drink them in about 15 minutes, and if I'm not going to finish it right away I try to put it back in the fridge. I use Fairlife Nutrition Plan or Fairlife Core Power, or Premier Protein. Come to think of it, there have been times when I haven't finished the Core Power and have instead put them in my backpack for an hour or so, and then I shake them and they seem fine.

I think it might just be the ensure brand...
I made a Protein Shake with pure Protein, a scoop of Isopure and a single shot of Decaf espresso. It took me 4 hours to drink and didn't go bad tasting. It separated a little but I just stirred it.

Thanks!

Yeah that's only for doing coke.

XD lol

Use a straw at your own comfort and pace. I use them sometimes. Just be cognizant of how much air you're sucking in (i.e. if the drink is low). I've done it probably 5 times now since my surgery Feb 14th and it doesn't bother me at all. I get gassier eating popsicles lol

Indeed, there's no reason using a straw should introduce more air than any other mode of drinking. I can imagine slurping from a spoon might be the worst. However surgeons wouldn't be surgeons without a rule compendium.

I think it depends on the doctors' instructions.

My surgeon told me to avoid them during the first 1-3 weeks, because, excess gas in the stomach could put pressure on the staple lines, and cause a dreaded leak.

After the 1-month post-op, he said that I could use them if they didn't give me discomfort.

I know of people that haven't used them again, and others that have used them since day 1 post-op. YMMV.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
