Post op 1 day pain and food

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I did it. I’m one day post op bypass and still in hospital. I have severe stomach and back pain (cramps in the back) I can’t walk without behind hunched over or lie on my side. Whenever I talk medicine or food or Water the pain gets worse and my stomach gurgles making me feel like I’m about to have explosive diahorrea. How was everyone else’s experience post op one day? What shall I do?

sorry to hear that - I had almost no pain at all. But some people DO have it. Just let the nurse know - they'll give you something for it. No sense in suffering.

you probably won't have explosive diarrhea - there wouldn't be enough in there for that if you've been on liquids. It may just be a sensation in your intestines. Again, just let a nurse know.

Aaah. The fun & games of how we all differently react to surgery & heal. My back went into spasm too so I know what you’re feeling - every position caused pain. Mine was because I had pain from swelling on swallowing so I was holding tension in my body causing the spasms. A heating pad should help & a pressure point massage from a physiotherapist if you can get one. The pain meds should be managing the surgical pain. If not, speak to your nurse. The back pain was gone in a day, surgical pain was almost nothing by day 4. I didn’t have any gas pain. I did have the sudden & completely unexpected bout of diarrhoea on day 3. Just once but that was enough. Yikes!

I still gurgle - my own personal poltergeist in my tummy. It’s doing it now 😂.

It does get better but it is scary at first because you don’t if what you’re experiencing is right or wrong.

They pump you absolutely chock full of both fluids and surgical gas. As much as it hurts, walking will help dispel the gas. I had sleeve, not bypass, but all laparoscopic surgeries require gas to keep certain bits inflated and give the surgeon room to work. I lived on chewable Gas-X (simethicone tablets) for three days post-op, and then it just... stopped.

I had the surgery this morning along with gallbladder removal. Pain is pretty manageable but I’ve had c sections and those recoveries were rough. I walked a lot after I woke up in recovery so I think that helped with the trapped gas but the gas is definitely uncomfortable. I threw up a lot during the day so I am still on nothing by mouth. The freaking thirst is killing me but at this point I am just trusting the process since I don’t have a choice anyway lol.

Hi,

On day three post op and the pain is excruciating. I can’t drink or eat or even take my medicines without the pain becoming unbearable. This morning I can’t sit or stand or lie down because it hurts so much. They have me paracetamol but taking it makes the pain worse. I’m really scared and In pain- what’s gone wrong?

I'm so sorry the pain is so bad. Have you contacted your surgeon's office to discuss? Pain isn't necessarily indicative of a problem, but if it is truly unbearable, then it justifies a call to discuss. Are you able to walk around at all, even if slowly? Getting up and moving will help expel the gas used to inflate your abdomen during surgery, which nearly always helps reduce pain. Also taking Gas-X can help, use the chewables if you need to. A heating pad can also help with the pain from gas and the discomfort. As far as eating or drinking, make sure you are following your surgeon's plan and not eating or drinking anything that isn't recommended. But try and sip as much Water as you can, as dehydration will only further complicate your recovery. Again, everyone's pain tolerance is different and their recovery experience is different, but if you are in so much pain that you are concerned, you absolutely should contact your surgeon.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
