Severe gut issues after 6 months

Recommended Posts

Hello all
I had the sleeve almost 2 years ago. About 6 months out I began having severe gas issues to the point that I simply cannot control it. It is severe and constant. I've been to 2 gastro doc specialists, one at UCLA. I have had every test under the sun, some twice. They can offer me no help. Nothing helps. I've quit my job and have virtually become a hermit. I feel like my life is over and greatly regret my decision. I'm trying to find anyone that has had this issue also. I'm desperate! As I said, I've been thoroughly tested and do not have any common gut issues out there.

I’m sorry you are going through this. Have you spoken with a bariatric dietitian? An allergist? I might try an elimination diet to see what’s bothering you. I probably would see a therapist to get some emotional boost because this sounds so discouraging. Gather your emotional supporters to help you remember you are not imagining this. There is an answer for this, and it may take some serious detective work to figure it out. I found out I simply cannot have eggs after surgery and I always was lactose intolerant. Eggs and milk are in almost everything, even deli meats except Boar’s Head.

Have you been tested for parasite infections?

might be some kind of food intolerance - maybe sugar alcohols? (i.e, artificial sweeteners with names that end in "-itol" - like xylitol and maltitol). A lot of people get G/I problems from those. I know some people who've had the duodenal switch have trouble with carbs in general - not sure about people who just have the sleeve, though. But sugar alcohols do bother a lot of people. Or I suppose it could be some other food intolerance - lactose, maybe? I agree with the response above that you may want to try eliminating certain things from your diet to see if it's something you're eating

Hello
Thank you for the responses. I have lactose intolerance so I avoid that. I've talked to dietician and have been on low fodmap diet to eliminate and add foods back in. Everyone always suggests this first. It isn't food, I wish it was cause that's an easy fix. I've been tested for parasites, yes. I've had colonoscopy, endoscopy, modified barium swallow, 3 CT scans, 2 ultra sounds, too many blood tests to count and 4 or 5 breath tests. Many many prescriptions that don't help. I've been to a naturopath with still no relief. I am hoping to find someone who has had the same things and found help. But I've kind of given up hope at this point.

Are you only having gas as a side effect or are there other GI issues that go along with this?

Are you taking a high quality probiotic and have you tried any bromelain/papayin based digestive enzymes?

This may sound random, but I’ve heard of people having their vagus nerve damaged during surgery and this causing a lot of different odd side effects. It’s most commonly damaged during GI surgeries. My grandmother had her cut during a “routine” gallbladder removal and she’s suffered odd symptoms for many years before they finally found out what the issue was.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
