Trying to figure out pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Hello!

My surgery date is 9/8. I'm trying to get ready for at least the pre-op diet (I know my tastes may change post-op), and I'm wondering if anyone's used the Aldi brand "Elevation" shakes? I've tried one and they're not too bad, and they seem to be comparable to the shakes they have at Walmart. They have 30 grams of Protein and 1 gram of sugar, which sounds alright. Also, can you mix them with anything? I'm wondering if I could mix the vanilla one with coffee or something to make a "fancy" drink.

I'm excited and nervous, and I just want to be sure I'm doing everything right!

My Protein Drink of choice is Walmart's Equate brand powder. I blend it (as in actually make it in the blender) with 8 oz. of Fairlife Skim milk and ice. It blends up foamy and stays that way. I like it that way rather than thin.

Pre-made shakes seem to work for coffee creamer. But Protein powders added to hot liquid form clumps.

Premiere Protein makes a caffe latte that’s really good for the fancy coffee drink taste. It has caffeine in the pre mixed one. The powder (sold on Amazon) does not have caffeine but it tastes different and I was not a fan of it. I am five months out and I still have one of these every morning for Breakfast.

I drink Elevation shakes sometimes now (I'm six years out), but we were told to stick to whey Protein isolate shakes during the first few months when we weren't getting our protein needs met from food alone (whey protein isolate is the most absorbable form of protein). Elevation shakes are a blend - NOT whey protein isolate. So if your program requires whey protein isolate shakes, then Elevation aren't going to work - at least not in the early post-op stages. they should be fine for pre-op and for once you're a ways out from post-op, though.

Did anyone tell you not to stick up on too much for after surgery. Some of our tastes change and a common thing for Protein Shakes is to taste too sweet.

Shopgirl...I had the same experience with the powdered cafe latte. It has a sickeningly sweet after taste that made me unable to drink it. I have found that most of the Protein Drinks with a little bit of powdered Peanut Butter taste much better if you like peanut butter.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
