When will the stall end??

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I am 16 days post op from gastric sleeve. I lost 10 pounds quickly the first 5 days after surgery and have been at the same weight for 11 days now. 😥 I have been following my program: meeting Water goals, starting supplements when I was supposed to and following the food plan.

I know that stalls are to be expected, but darn it if it isn’t frustrating! When will it end? I am putting it out into the universe that I want to bust through this wall!

How long did your stall last and was it right after surgery for you as well?

On the positive side: I am already off of 3 of my 4 blood pressure meds, feel good, and have been sleeping great. I’m trying to focus on these great healthy wins and not the numbers on the scale.

Thanks to all for the support an insights offered on this site. I appreciate it greatly!

My first stall was around 2/3 weeks out and it lasted like 12 days. Then I started to lose again. I feel like I've been in another stall and have been for the past week+ as I've not lost anything additional in that time.

But based on info here and what my dietician and surgeons office have said, I'm doing everything right and I need to stay on plan cause I will start losing again. This is normal and happens to most everyone. You're probably no different.

Great news about the meds. That is ultimately my goal too, to be taken off of it all. At my two week checkup I was cut back on my BP meds too and taken completely off the one. Now we'll see in Sept. if they will be reduced again along with my Metformin.

I stall a lot I feel like. Then boom 4 pounds comes off. I really have to eat just Protein all the time. If i don't the weight doesn't come off , I swear . New to the journey but figuring out my body daily . First one lasted 2.5 weeks at my 3 week mark then again at 7 weeks .... lasted 2 weeks .

Stalls happen. For me, they happen all the time. However, probably something like 80% of people have their first stall within the first month. It's generally referred to as 'the 3 week stall' because it usually happens around week 3 post op though can happen around weeks 2-5. Stalls generally last between 2-3 weeks. My longest one lasted 47 days. And no, I'm not joking. I lost 2 pounds on May 5th and then didn't lose anything until June 22nd where I lost 1 pound. Fifteen days later I lost another pound (it's been two days since I lost that last pound lol so who knows how long until I lose another). However, I'm also 17 months out so I'm getting closer to maintenance so my experience is a little different I guess, but I've had stalls constantly throughout my journey. It's an annoying part of it, for me. But hey, I've still lost 138 pounds since my surgery (and an additional 68 pounds prior to surgery) so try not to stress (next to impossible not to, I know).

Interesting. I've thought about this and wondered if the lack of Protein could be my problem/reason for my stalls. There are MANY days where my protein only falls around half, or a little more than half, of what I should be getting a day. I need to concentrate on upping it, I think. And if I can't with food at least taking it in the form of GENEPRO. That will get me where I need to be quickly/easily.

I think you're right on here. When I let my daily protein slip, I stop losing, which is probably best. Losing weight when not eating enough protein means losing muscle mass. The fat doesn't come off unless we're getting in the protein we're supposed to.

Thanks for the info. Yesterday I started upping my protein and will continue to do so to see if anything changes.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
