On day 5 of 14 for my pre-op diet. Feeling a bit better but it’s so HARD!! my doctor’s list of ‘foods’ for the diet is pretty short😩 shakes, SF Jello & popsicles, broth, Decaf coffee& teas, SF electrolyte drinks. Surgery dates August 5th. I’m so ready!!

I'll be honest...I've had a bunch of mini meltdowns over the last few days. I'm chalking it up to some stressors we've been going through, but all weekend I've been second guessing myself. Some of our kids were here and we went out to dinner a few times and all I kept thinking is "Am I going to be able to do this again?" Am I going to be able to eat out? Have wine out? go on vacation and feel normal?? etc. I never really thought I was obsessed with food...but I was this weekend!! LOL Then I started second guessing myself. UGH.

Also, not being sure about insurance isn't helping. I got that denial letter and the person who does the pre-auths was on vacation and back today. I have an appt tomorrow with the nurse practitioner so hopefully I'll get some good news.

Other than that, just losing my mind. ;)

i had the same feeling and spent a week depressed, i spoke to my dietician about it and she said, thats called "the last supper mentality" and we cant think like that cause itll birth depression after surgery. She said we (me and you and everyone who has this procedure ) will still be able to eat what we like, EXCEPT in smaller quantities. (to keep from gaining weight)

How are everyone's pre-op diets going? I start on Wednesday and I'm nervous but excited. My doctor's plan is pretty reasonable--two weeks of 2 Protein Shakes, one healthy meal, and a couple of Snacks a day if needed. The key is that I have to stay under 50g carbs and 1000 calories. It sounds a lot like doing slimfast when I was younger so I just hope it's more successful lol.
Still just waiting on my FMLA paperwork for work but otherwise everything is all set. I had my last pre-op appointment today to go over medications etc and I guess I'm ready?
Are you having VSG or RNY? And how long are you taking FMLA for? My date is Sep 20 and i got my FMLA papers printed, ill take it to my surgeon on my last appt. Im having RNY, im thinking 4 weeks is ok? Ive been reading the threads here and im finding out the recovery is slow and consuming, i dont know what to decide. Ive never taken FMLA, lol

Thanks so much Cheryl. That makes sense. I did feel like “well this is the last time I’ll be eating at this restaurant.” I have struggled with depression but it’s been under control for YEARS. I had to change my meds from Extended release to SR. I think it was just the perfect storm. Thank you!!

Same here! I was out at Breakfast last weekend and the thought hit me that this is the last time I'll be able to have coffee WITH my breakfast. It's not helped by the fact that I'm trying to quit coffee this week while I can still have NSAIDs before my surgery.

Ugh I'm so frustrated with my clinic over this paperwork. They just uploaded the completed version and it's all based on my original surgery date, not the new date they gave me! Shouldn't they know when this is happening?! Also I told my work two weeks based on previous conversations and they filled the paperwork out as three weeks. I work from home and thought even two weeks was a long time.

That is so frustrating! I hope they get your paperwork fixed soon! I hear you on the coffee, too! I start my pre-op diet on August 9th (trying to clean my diet up before that, too) and I have to eliminate coffee. That is going to be really tough! Does your clinic allow coffee once you are healed?

I think it's allowed after a month as long as you're not using it as a vehicle for cream and sugar. 😆

I weaned myself off coffee.... well..kinda. I went to half caf and then to Decaf . I figured I don't want to go through caffeine withdrawal on top of everything else. I'm on day 2 of pre-op and I've been using my (decaf) cold brew with a scoop of mocha Cappuccino Protein Powder.

My surgeon's office has no coffee at all for 2 weeks after surgery.

Ok, time for honesty for me. I’m on day 8 of my preop and on a couple of these days I was so low blood sugar I was shaking (I’m not diabetic). To fix this, I had about 200 calories of cheese. I’ve also gone from 6 caffeinated beverages a day before the preop diet to 2. Tomorrow I’ll start tapering down to 1 cup of coffee. I have a demanding and stressful job and I still need to function. Have I totally gone off the rails?

I wonder if it’s nit blood sugar but withdrawal from the caffeine. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
