Hi everyone I am scheduled for surgery July 14 so that means in about one week I will start my liquid diet I’m just wondering if there’s things I should do or stuff I should eat and enjoy before my surgery ?? is there anything that you wish you had done that you could give me advice on ? Will I be able to have a normal life the first 30 days or is it more like being on bed rest? Should I go on a mini vacation? Go out to eat every day? thank you

The more weight you lose before surgery, the better. I think most people do a food funeral or two...a big goodbye to something they love....but it's actually pretty silly. I've eaten pretty much everything I've ever eaten, just much smaller amounts and a lot of it I don't like as much anymore.

Have a food funeral or two...but don't go crazy. Stick to your diet as much as possible.

I never did bed rest. LOL. Not even the day of surgery. Day I had my surgery, I walked over a mile in the halls of the bariatric wing. I pretty much got back to life.

Lay in a supply of your favorite protien drinks, sugar free Jello, Bone Broth, tea, Mio...stuff you can have right after surgery.

Wow thanks for the tips. Your a good role model although I don’t think I’ll be doing too many miles in the hospital. I’m starting to get nervous just trying to prepare

I had a very easy recovery. I was up and walking around my house the first couple of days, and outside walking after that. Like creekimp, I can eat most things now that I did before surgery, I just eat a lot less of them. It's really the first few weeks/months that you have a lot of restrictions.

I didn't do any food blow-outs before surgery since I'd lost 57 lbs by then (didn't want to blow it!!). We did go to a couple of our favorite places that last week since I knew it'd be awhile before I could go again, but I didn't go hog wild there. I eat reasonable portions.

Thanks I’m feeling so much better. I don’t feel the need to hurry and eat things now. I’m glad I will see everything again and don’t have to do a funeral

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
