May Surgeries - check in!

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for 31st May and I'm getting so anxious about it. I have been wishing the months away to get to this point but now it's close I'm in a bit of a panic. I have yo-yo 'd up and down my whole adult life (40 YEARS) and while I have managed to lose considerable amounts of weight over the years, it just won't budge anymore, not even on VLCD's so I'm very scared that even the sleeve won't work. My husband is also having VSG surgery on 28th June so I'll hopefully be able to guide him through the liquid stages.

Also, my surgeon said I didn't need to do the pre-op diet (apart from 48 hours before surgery but I'm thinking I will do it anyway as I feel it will help transition me into liquids so that when surgery time comes it won't be so much of a shock to me! Good luck to all of you who are having your surgery this week!

Hello and welcome! I'll have mine on May 19th. Tomorrow I attend my pre op class and also meet with my surgeon one last time so I guess I'll find out the deets to my pre surgery diet tomorrow. I know there is one, cause I saw it in the notes of the dietician, just not sure of the details.

There is another forum about May surgery dates too. You can check it out at:

Mine is also May 19th. I’m having a hard time with this liquid diet. The first 8 days were good but now I want food. I’m in a bad mood, dizzy and I can’t believe I have 10 days of more liquid diet after surgery before I can eat. All I want to do is chew something!

Yay, someone else on the same day! There are several of us! I know what you mean. My pr op diet consisted of 4 Protein Shakes and 4 one cup non starchy veggies a day. By day 4 I cheated and had a few bites of chicken breast cause I feel I needed it and on two other days I had a few slices of spicy salami. I figured I wasn't doing anything too nuts since others have been allowed meat on their pre op diet. But I haven't cheated since then. I haven't been too hungry most days. Just needed a little extra those few for whatever reason. Maybe because it's that time of month (which it's late) and plus I had a hard work out at the gym the one day too. The pickles (which is a free item for me and I can have as many as I want) and the cucumbers with vinegar and salt and pepper are the only things that have been saving me. LOL

Hang in there! We'll get through it. After surgery I have two more weeks of full liquids but it allows me to at least add in a few more items that I currently can't have. Best of luck!!!

I am May 19th as well. I’m not sure what your liquid diet consists of but mine is 5 Protein Shakes, broth, and sugar free Jello. I have to do 3 weeks worth of it and I found if I time things in every 2 hours I’m okay. I also made jello with flavor free Protein Powder and that helps a lot as well. Hang in there and the sugar free jello is great when I feel like I need to chew something.

Day 6 post op sleeve. I feel great!! I wasn't sure I would reach this point. I have felt pretty yuck most days, yesterday finally pooped. Today my stomach is half its size, all the swelling is gone. I want coffee really bad so I decided to come off Clear Liquids a day early. I am drinking a regular Protein Shake, so far I'm nearly an hour into it. I may give up getting it down and try again later.

I had surgery Friday. Today is Sunday and I’m flying home soon. It’s so weird not being able to finish a popsicle. VERY weird! I just made some hot Water in the coffee pot and put a spoonful of bouillon in it that I had brought along on the trip. I had almost half of a small coffee cup and that and I’m full as can be. I’m not in any pain. I can get out of bed without pulling on anything I just kind of roll over on my side and ease up. I took a shower the day after my surgery. I just have steri strips on the incisions and they are small. This had been much easier than I thought. You really do have to work to get the liquid in. I don’t think I realized just how slow that goes.

@JenniferHawk1980

i got a massage yesterday and laid on my stomach I couldn’t believe it!
They gave me dilaudid for pain or however you spell it the day of surgery but after that I had toradol. I don’t think that’s very strong. They did discharge me with some but I just took the one at 7 am today and I’m good. Drinking out of straws or chewing gum are nono’s because of taking in air. The extra air makes you feel like you are going to pop lol. I don’t need any more air for sure.
When the doctor came to see me yesterday a few times he said my homework for the day was to rest, walk the halls every hour and to let ice chips melt in my mouth not to crunch them. I did exactly what he said to do. I’ll be on clear liquids until next Sunday but I Havnt even really thought about food. My husband was eating Pringle’s several times and they looked good to me but I quickly forgot about them and got another ice chip. All good.

He gave me liquid hydrocodone and something for nausea and a patch for nausea and told me to fill them now. I will wear the patch to surgery. I am supposed to be going home the same day and then going to his office the next morning for postop. No one that I have talked to went home the same day. Pain management is something that I am worried about. I planned on going back to work 8 days later (desk job).

@JenniferHawk1980

they gave me zofran for nausea so I was never nauseated or threw up. I would if I didn’t pay attention when I was drinking the broth or popsicle if I overate I think. It doesn’t take much at a time right now while things are swollen. I’m using a spoon instead of just drinking from a cup because I’m a gulper 😂 and don’t trust myself. 🙌🏼 I have this semethicone gel they gave me yesterday if I’m gassy. I have some with me I used that today once. I swallowed my first pill this morning and that went fine. Every 45 min i took the next pill i needed to take which for me was omeprazole for acid then an antibiotic then later i took my thyroid pill and around noon I took my Wellbutrin. I made 3 laps around the halls 3 times on my surgery day so I wasn’t miserable by any means. walk as soon as you have your self back enough to do it that is my best advice I think. They gave me iv fluids all day and night on surgery day and then until noon the day following it. They just called it off in case I needed more fluids but I was taking in plenty by mouth so they pulled it last night. I’m trying to think of anything else Y’all might want to know to help.
Surgery day i used that mouth spray to keep mouth moist because i wasn’t allowed to drinks they did let me sip swish and spit though. At 8 am the following day I got ice chips and could have a plain no fruit popsicles however much I wanted. I had a few sips of a slush last night and lots of ice all day and night. This morning at 6 am they brought me a small juice box they put in a cup with a spoon and i had all of it. I had part of a Gatorade Protein Drink this morning and ice chips and half of a small cup of broth. I’m full! Husband is eating a subway sandwich and I’m not even thinking about it. I’d normally be wanting some 😜😜

May 27. Gastric bypass. My family is not on board but I am going forward.

You do this for you and for your health! I'm afraid to tell my mom, one of my sisters and my gram for that reason. I'm afraid of their Negativity and I'm afraid of it effecting things. The guilt is real because I'm afraid of the what if something happens to me during surgery.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
