Any surgery regrets?

Recommended Posts

I think I'm an unusual case. I had RNY three months ago. I can eat almost anything, as long as it's in moderation. The only time I have "dumped" is when I foolishly scarfed down a bagel from Dunkin' Donuts when I was in a hurry to eat at work before a meeting. If I had chewed slowly and mindfully, and only eaten half the bagel with cream cheese, I would have tolerated it with no issues. I love my surgery. One of my worst fears pre-surgery is that I wouldn't be able to enjoy Mexican food again, which is my favorite food on the planet. I can! But I only eat about a quarter of what I used to, and feel very satisfied. PLUS I get a ton of yummy leftovers to take to work!

Here's my final take. The main reason why I love this surgery is that food is no longer this constant, mentally-intrusive, all-consuming desire for me like it used to be. I'm not consumed by gnawing hunger and spending all my free will just trying to keep the monster at bay. Food is just...food. I don't obsess over it. I'm not overly hungry. I just feel...normal. I still enjoy eating and a little goes a very long way. I feel like I have my life back.

Does anyone here regret having had gastric bypass surgery? I’m still in the preop stage. I keep hearing about the downsides: adhesions, forever being careful of what to eat, dumping, stricture, malabsorption, etc. I’m getting scared to move forward. Part of me feels like I can lose weight with my doctors help (I’ve already lost 40 pounds, 80 to go). The other part of me says okay, you have surgery and lose the weight then what?? You’re stuck with the side effects? I’m getting scared and about to talk myself out of it. I’d like to hear your story and of you had similar thoughts are you still happy with the surgery?

Part of me says I should have been able to do this without surgery but lets face it I didnt. I also didnt lose 40lbs before surgery like yourself. I will say this I am on meds that I will never be able to get off of now and that does cause me anxiety and still knowing all of this I would do it again because being morbidly obese consumed my life and thats one monkey off my back ! Good luck

NONE. ZERO. NADA. NIX. Best think I have ever done!!!! And why the bypass and not the sleeve? I lost 83 lbs on the sleeve (took one year) and it's been fantastic on so many levels. In fact, I am 67 years old (10 years out) and take no medication (I was on cholesterol and blood pressure meds) and I feel great. I wrote a book called Queen of Crop about my first year (one chapter for each week). It was a grand adventure. I am now in the process of writing Queen of Crop - Ten years after. Because I have gained 15 lbs of the 83 I lost. But seriously, I felt so FREE from food and diets for so many years. It's a personal decision of course but I will tell you, for me, best decision of my life!!!!

Yes...my regret tho is not following through and getting comfortable. Had my VSG in July 2016, lost 80 lbs that first year then started eating and pushing the limits. Hence I gained back 50 of the 80 lost. I just had revision from VSG to RNY last week and I was told I wouldn't lose much that don't expect the same results with revision. Im not screwing up this third and final chance. I will be the exception and lose the 50+ I gained back.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
