Hello

In not 65, I'm almost 62 though. I'm three years post op.

Hi there. I was 65 when I had the RNY bypass. This April 28 I will be four years out and in September I turn 70. I am 4ft 11” tall and weighed 248.9 when I had the surgery. I wore a very tight and uncomfortable size 22. I suffered from asthma and needed a Cpap machine. I lost one half of myself. At 124 and between a size 4 or 6 depending on how its made, I have enjoyed many shopping trips to replace my wardrobe. I remember standing in front of a full length mirror in size 16 jeans and staring at my reflection with tears running down my face for at least fifteen minutes. I couldnt believe the difference. I didnt know the person I was looking at. While that was important the very best that happened was that my asthma is gone. Totally gone and I dont need to hook up to the cpap machine any more either. I have crazy energy. I opened a store at the end of 2019 and went to Legoland with my daughter and grandchildren and kept up with them and fit in the roller coaster seat with the bar all the way down. I feel better gaining on 70 than I did at 45. My only regret is that I didnt do it sooner. I missed so much before surgery.

Here is my advice to you. Read everything you can. Get out of bed after surgery and walk the gas out which moves the pain out. Follow the diet you get from the nutritionist. Go into this with a very positive attitude and let life fill your heart and soul. Enjoy every day of your life and keep a diary with honest statements of what you are seeing and feeling. It will get you thru when you finally realize that person staring back in the mirror is really you. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. You have done wonderfully! Your advice is dead on - same as I did with my ever increasing faulty lapband. I did manage to lose over 100 lbs. though through pure grit and determination but now it MUST come out.

I am 62 and just had bypass surgery Feb 2. I am a stickler for following the Dr’s orders and am doing quite well. I can only walk for 20 minutes because I am still heavy, but I add in 35 minutes on the bike. My biggest mistake is taking bites that are to big but my gut is quick to remind me. I am eating healthy and feel great.

I am 68 y.o., had Gastric Bypass 06/19. Lost 80lbs in approx 6 months. Didn’t exercise much. But felt so much more energy. My personal goal was to be able to get down on the floor (AND get up without help) so I could play with my grandchildren. AND to be healthy!!!! I had Arthritis, sleep Apnea, hypothyroidism. Now approaching 2 years post-op, I have gained 7 lbs which I swore to myself I would NEVER do. Getting depressed thinking the bypass is not working, etc. Happened to come across a book on Amazon written by 2 Dieticians who work with WLS pets.
The Complete Guide to Weight Loss Surgery, your questions finally answered by Kaouk and Bashaw. It has helped bring me back to basics. As in slowing down to eat, chew slowly, do not drink while eating, eat Protein first. Have been very stressed over this 7 lbs. My main issue has always been night time eating. Now I am excited to gain back control over my life once again. So glad to see other people who had their WLS at my age. We can do this!!!!

I am only 62 but have been really happy with the results of my bypass. However... that said, I didn't realize that I would end up with so much wrinkled skin. I've been reading the forums for two years and haven't seen any other mentions of this outcome for older people. Without clothes, I look about 75. My dermatologist said that there's nothing that can be done -- I should just keep covered up. I'm probably an aberration since this isn't ever mentioned by posters and my surgeon said nothing about it.

I am 68 and am right there with you. Short of spending many thousands on plastic surgery, I get to live with the extra skin. A small price to pay for health. 😀😀

I am 64 and am in the process of converting from a Lap Band (10-28-08) to a Bypass. The Lap Band was removed the middle of August, the Bypass has now been scheduled for March 9, 2021. Nervous and excited. I lost 160 pounds with the Lap Band, but then started to have issues. I had some Fluid removed, but the Band still made it so I couldn't eat vegetables or fruit. Yes, I learned to eat around it!

New chapter starts 3-9-21

Hello, I am 65 will be post op 3 yrs April 2021 So you had the lap band and having a do over with the sleeve? I had the sleeve and did lose 100 lbs but have been stuck and I am thinking I may have stretched my stomach and I am thinking of asking for a do over and go with the lap band, which is what I wanted in the first place but because I was like 370 lbs it was suggested the sleeve would be best.
I see my Bariatric doctor this week and my weight has gone up a bit since I saw her 6 months ago.
One main problems is I don’t have a regular schedule. I’m retired, live with 2 cats. I can wake up at 10AM have coffee and really not hungry but when I do eat (between 8PM-midnight) I want a little of this and that. So days/evenings I forget I hadn’t eaten, So yeah I don’t have a set schedule to sleep, get up, have Breakfast, lunch, dinner. So maybe we can help each other out.... yes we can do this!!!!

I am also retired 68 yo. June 3rd will mark 2 yrs Roux en Y. I have noticed that I tend to graze more so in the evening. I had gotten away from taking my time (20-30 min) to eat, not drinking while I am eating, and waiting 20 minutes after eating before I drink again. I also have coffee in the AM, but my husband & I are both big on having that first meal of the day. There is a reason it is called breakfast as in break the fast. 😀😀 For me, it sets the trend to get on schedule.
I also have returned to using the Baritastic app. If I write it down, it helps me be accountable to myself. I am open to any other suggestions.

I'm 68 and had revision from a 1984 surgery, VBG, to R&Y on February 15th this year. I've lost 55 pounds. food doesn't taste right but many say that will improve with time. Right now it helps with the weight loss because I only eat for nourishment.

I've had no complications other than food tasting different but that's pretty much par for the course.

food tastes lousy to me too. Maybe not all of it but most of it. I had surgery Feb 2, 2021 and I am having an issue with meat. I can only have a few tiny bites and it gets suck very easily. I chew the heck out of it. It is frustrating.

Pkump, get some Papaya enzymes. Everyone on my surgeons FB page swears by them. I won’t know until End of April after my reversion. They help produce more saliva and digestive juices. They also say get up and walk.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
