First Day after VSG

Recommended Posts

So, when I started this journey, I knew I may have GERD because I had it mildly before. Now it has seemingly come
Back. I asked the nurses about this and they said it was normal the first couple of days out. It still makes me nervous.

Also I am coughing occasionally with phlegm. My throat is somewhat scratchy due to the tube. Had anyone else had either of these two? Thanks!

Have you been prescribed an anti acid or acid reducing medication? I was required one for a about a month following surgery to help reduce acid production.

My surgery was December 15th. I did have phlegm for the first few days...just cough it up and you should be good. Continue to do the breathing treatment they give you to do even when you ho home too. Unfortunately, I cant help you with gerd cause I’m not/haven’t experienced that.

Wishing you a safe snd happy journey!

I get to take omperazole tomorrow. Tonight I can’t. Good to know about the phlegm. I got scared because that first night, I didn’t have my mask on because I was so doped up.

The GERD feeling lasted for about a week or so after surgery for me (VSG) - A super tight feeling in my upper chest everytime I swallowed. I was SUPER frustrated and a little distressed. Then suddenly one day it just went away. Hopefully you will experience the same.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
