Can't drink any fluids

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days post op of my RNY and I am not at all able to even drink Water without it being incredibly painful. Tomorrow I set up an appointment with my surgeon and nurse to follow their advice. As of right now they're going to give me fluids tomorrow. I just don't understand why it's like this? Any insight?

Surgery is harder on some of us than others. It may just take you a bit longer to get past the pain.

I would make sure I am doing small sips, room temperature or perhaps slightly warmer Water. Cold or hot could cause a shock to your fresh surgery and cause pain in a variety of ways. Experiment a bit with temperatures, see if it gets you anywhere.

Your Doc will get you through it.

I definitely will try the warmer Water. I only used my faucet water on cold. I do the small sips but it kind of feels like air is being trapped in my body as well and I get these really painful hiccups.

Thank you.

It took me a couple of days before I could sip without pain. I was able to handle sugar free popsicles and sugar free Jello though. Go figure. I was eventually able to sip without pain.

I had the same challenge my doctor shared that Water can be harder to drink initially. I was able drink herbal tea, I would make a slushy of sugar-free Gatorade. Hope this helps!

I’ve always preferred my Water and Gatorade room temp, even more post op. At first water was painful but Gatorade zero was absolutely fine (as long as it was room temp). For the first week or so that was all I drank (excluding broths and Protein Shakes etc).

Based on my experience what I think is happening is that because everything is swollen from being cut up there is very little room in your pouch right after. That means when you drink something any air in there can't easily get past what you just drank to escape and it causes a bottleneck that is painful. I noticed that right after swallowing I would feel a little pain and then occasionally a tiny little burp would follow and relieve what I was feeling. I just tried to take tiny little sips until it eventually got better. I also did end up drinking mostly room temp things since they sat out forever because of how slow I was drinking them.

What did your doctor end up saying?

For a while after my VSG all I could drink was grape Powerade zero or Walmart brand grape water bottle packets; I don’t know what it was but definitely strange as I hated artificial grape anything before surgery.

After my VSG to RNY revision though it was much easier to drink anything except if it was icy cold. In that case it would come right back up. Now that I’m a few months out from revision it’s much easier to get in cold drinks.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
