Carbs after gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

programs are all over the place with this. Some want their patients on ultra-low-carb diets (like under 40 or so), some want them on semi-low carb diets (e.g., 80 or fewer), and some don't care about carbs at all. So...you're likely to get answers all across the board. My program didn't mention counting carbs, but after fitting all of my Protein in, it was pretty rare that I got over 80 or so until I was over a year out.

Does anyone know how many carbs we should be shooting for after gastric bypass? I’m 10 months out, down about 96 pounds from highest weight

Congrats on the 96 lb.

It varies big time. I never counted carbs or calories. I only made sure to reach the Protein goal. Worked fine for me and still does.

I was told to try and not go over 36 carbs per meal. If it has more that 36 carbs a serving im not suppose to eat it.

What's the rationale behind that? Possible dumping?

I was told to avoid carbs while in the weightloss window. The weightloss window is 12-18 months post op. I do have carbs though mainly from low carb Condiments and shakes

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
