Incessant air bubbles after consuming anything

Recommended Posts

I’m almost 8 months post op and to this point I have no issues at all. However, starting today any time I eat or drink ANYTHING I get horrendous air bubbles. I spend the next couple hours burping or trying to burp to release the air. I don’t have any feeling of acid but the “bubbles” are very uncomfortable and I have nearly thrown up from the pressure when I burp.
Any ideas what this could possibly be?
I haven’t changed anything. Eating slow. Chewing slow. Not drinking while eating. Literally nothing has changed.

It may be food specific if it just started. What were you eating/drinking when it happened?

I would think that too, but I have the same thing I always have at work. Protein Shake mixed with coffee when it started. Then after anything (water, Gatorade, chicken, cheese, etc) it happened.

Burping and pain in your upper abdomen/epigastric region (from gas or???), can be symptoms of GERD. Probably a good idea to contact your PCP or surgeon’s office if symptoms persist.

Do you take anything for GERD now?

I’m glad you take something. Like I said though, if this keeps happening, you should contact one of your providers.

Hope you feel better!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
