Worried about never reaching goal.

Recommended Posts

My sleeve is scheduled for this month. I'm self paid, doing it in Mexico, 5ft 1, 174lbs, bmi 32.9. I am prediabetes, high blood pressure and painful joints. I have a very small frame.

I took a lot of prescribed steroids for medical conditions and antidepressants for many years and even with exercise and calorie control, could not lose on healthy diet. So I decided to get surgery.

As an Asian, the cut off for health bmi is 22.9 so my goal is get a bmi of 21 or 22. So my goal is 111-117lbs. Im 32, never had child, and my doctors back home agree it's a good goal weight. I have therapist and nutritionist lined up for post surgery help, however I feel like after reading many posts by people at similar heights, I cannot expect to ever meet my goal weight, even after 1 year, and even if with regular exercise.

Has anyone of my height managed to lose and maintain a healthy bmi?

yes -- there are people your height who have done it. Regardless of height, though, the average weight loss is around 70% of excess weight. However, that is an average - and with any average, there are people who fall on either side of that. There will be those who lose less - and those who lose more - even some who'll lose 100% of their excess weight. My surgeon said only about 10-15% of his patients make it to a normal BMI, and research appears to back that up, but people do it - you'll find examples of that right here on BP. It'll take a lot of work and commitment, but it's not impossible.

Well I'm a man and much taller but I still made my goal and even went below my goal within the first year... But I had RNY bypass.... It is possible you just have to be vigilant...

Whether or not you reach your goal weight, you will almost certainly be better off than you are now in terms of your overall health. Not everyone will achieve an optimal BMI, but if you stick to the plan you will almost certainly lower your blood pressure, resolve your pre-diabetes, improve your joint pain, have more energy and a better quality of life. Don't worry if you can't be perfect--just do you best you can!

It is possible & there are quite a lot of us on this forum who have and yes, some don’t for myriad of reasons. I’m 5’3 with a smaller frame & I exceeded my goal. My BMI is about 19 at the moment.

But it’s not always about the number on the scale or your BMI. @Recidivist is correct. The ultimate goal should be about being healthy. You need to find the weight you can maintain while being able to live your life happily (balancing diet, exercise, family, relationships, etc.) & healthily.

Good luck with your surgery.

There are many on here who have reached and maintain a healthy BMI. But if you get to an overweight BMI, wouldn't that still be a big improvement over where you are now? Don't look for ways to sabotage yourself before you even have WLS :)

Don't self sabotage before you start! You can do this! You seem prepared, so just go for it!!!

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
