new to the site, not banded yet

Recommended Posts

My name is Sarah. I am in the early stages of a lap band "change of life." I have found a doctor, I have been to an informational meeting, and have my first appt. with the Dr. next week. It is at that meeting that I will get a comprehensive physical, and a better sense of the timeframe for this procdure.

I have been obese for 17 years now and have reached the end of my rope. I think kicking my food addiction is going to be tough, but I also feel ready to change my life. I feel like a prisoner in my own body. I have several herniated discs in my neck and lumbar spine and my excess body weight is making matters chronic.

I am 39, live in Maryland, am married to a great guy, have a wonderful 6 year old daughter, practice law and generally have a really good life. My weight is the one last bastion of dysfunction that I can't seem to get a handle on. I have tried diets, walking 5 days per week. I can never seem to lose more than 30lbs.

I would love to hear from people about their experience and what to expect. I am scared of some of the potential side effects.

Look forward to getting support here.

Sarah:)

Sarah,

You have come to the right place for support and information. the more research you do, the more confident in your decision you will become. There are lots of web sites on the net with information about lap banding and your doctor will be able to answer any questions. You may read on BB's like this about the problems that people are having. Remember that these problems do not necessarily happen to everybody, but if you asked if anyone would go without their band, my bet is you would get a unanimous NO.

I am from Sydney Australia, so you can see that we come from near and far and will all have different issues or stories to tell.

Welcome on what will probably become one of the most important journeys of your life. Just remember to take your time and smell the roses along the way.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
