When did you get back to exercise?

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks out and itching to get back to weight training. Right now I am walking around the track, riding the bike, using the treadmill at increased inclines, using the ecliptic machine, and I use the rower and arm cycle machine. I M still fatigued but working out helps me deal with stress and I sure sleep well.

I was not allowed to start incorporating weights until 6 months post op. Even though I despise walking for exercise I was up and walking around a few hours after surgery. The first few weeks as others have said I didn't have much energy, so it was hard to do much of anything. Once I was able to eat more solid foods and had some energy I was able to start walking more. I do try to take the dog for a walk a few times a week at least around the block (he had surgery and is not able to do long walks for quite some time). Once we have the space for it I plan on getting treadmill or bike so even when the weather is not optimal outside I can still get some activity in.

I was released to workout on weights around 6 weeks. I use the machines and free weights. I am three months out now and work out 1 to 1 1/2 hours 4-5 days a week. It really helps me lose weight and reduce stress. I am trying to get everything turned into muscle and it is working out well. I know I will still have some loose skin but my core will be tight.

This is all great information! I'm going to talk to my surgeon, but I'm wondering how quickly people get back to other activities, like bodyweight exercises. Resistance bands or other stuff you do around the house, and then videos like this:

Of course it's all individual and I will talk to my surgeon. But just wondering people's experiences/opinions.

I was told not to lift more than 10 lbs, does that mean after 2 weeks or so I can use 8lb weights (one at a time) to tone my arms? Just excited to do this all and I know I'm going to be bored healing at home for 5 weeks after surgery.

3 weeks out and I was cleared for low impact exercises. I like to do low impact walking exercise videos from growwithjo. I’m not cleared to lift weights until 2 months out which will be April 27. The first two weeks I walked a lot getting almost 10,000 steps each day and I am currently 26 pounds down.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
