VSG Stall 1 week post-op

Recommended Posts

I had VSG on 5/18. My insurance required a 6 month program prior to surgery, then I was delayed 2 more months with COVID-19. I lost quite a bit -73 lbs- pre-op (48y male, 6' 2", HW 382, SW 309, CW 301).

Surgery went well. Surgery day was rough with gas pain, but discharged by 2pm day after surgery and feeling good now.

I walked about a mile a day from day 2-5. Since day 5, I have walked 2 miles per day and do some resistance band training every other day.

I lost about 8 lbs in the first week, but have been stalled for the last 4 days. Since day 4, I have been averaging 400-500 calories daily with 70-80g Protein, ~30g carbs, almost no fat. Most carbs are from milk with the Protein Shakes or light fruit juice. I am getting in my hydration with non-milk liquids at ~70oz/day. Still on a liquid diet until 2 weeks post-op.

Is my pre-op weight loss slowing me down, or is this normal? A little frustrated as I thought this would be the time weight would just fall off.

both. Yes - people who lose a lot of weight pre-op don't usually see those huge drops the first month that others do, because most of those "big drops" is due to Water weight. If you lost a lot before surgery, that water weight is long gone.

secondly, almost everyone has their first stall during the first month or so after surgery. It's usually the third week (thus it's called "the three week stall", and there are hundreds of posts here on it), but it's not always the third week. Mine was weeks 2 & 3. Once my stall broke during week 4, I dropped like 6-8 lbs within a couple of days. So anyway, you may just be having your "three week stall" early.

I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started out at over 300 lbs. Figured I'd drop like crazy, too - but no, I did not. But like you, I lost a ton of weight (57 lbs) prior to surgery, and then I had that two-week-long stall....

I read a lot about the "3 week stall", but thought I was too early for that. Maybe not.

I also wanted to be sure I'm not doing something wrong or missing anything. Just shocked that a 300lb guy taking in 4-500 calories and exercising can maintain and not lose. I guess I need to be more patient.

Please stop working out ur body is not ready for running ur burning off the calories your intaking so your already not eating enough Protein to break down the fat then the lil protein you are eating when you run u burning them off stop walking a lil is ok but your stomach is still healing give it time to healing and the stall is normal

don't worry - you're doing everything correctly. This WILL work. I was worried about all that as well, but the weight DID come off!

Yea don't stress about exercise just yet mate just take your time getting in your Protein and Water and relax mate. I started at 322 but by surgery I was 257 and now I'm around 165-168 most days but I had bypass because I knew I needed to lose alot of weight and it has been amazing and I have not done much exercise either it was mostly low calories.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
