June 2020 surgeries

My surgery is tomorrow morning at 730am. I have to be there at 5 to check in, about 45 min from my house. I also have to be up at 3 for the Hibiclens shower and to drink a Gatorade. Between that and nerves I’m not sure I’ll be sleeping tonight!

Goodluck! I haven't gotten a gatorade instruction - I've been told absolutely nothing after midnight - but I have to do the shower at night and again early morning - it's so weird how everyone has a different protocol - makes me anxious! Fun, fun times! I'm already a bit of an insomniac - but it's been worse lately, for sure.

So exciting as these dates approach. @Boardfatgirl ... whose name will not be accurate soon enough we can be one day apart bypass twins!

@colormehappy and @havethree... I have the same worries. I dreampt last a friend who recently passed from pancreatic cancer came to me and said not to do the surgery. I woke in a pile of sweat. It's the voluntary part, I think. When you have a family who needs you and a life to live and you choose to risk it... obviously in the hopes to better yourself. It's scary. But I'm trying to think less. Just ... think. Less. I've made the decision. My surgeon has done nearly 4000 WLS. I'm just trusting its the right thing.

Oh my gosh, that dream would freak me out. But I totally understand. I have 4 and 5 year old boys, and I haven’t had surgery since I had kids. I keep going back and forth between feeling selfish for taking the risk of surgery, and feeling selfish for staying heavy and unable to be active with them. Ah, parenthood...

My surgeon has people drink 12 ounces of full sugar Gatorade 4 hours before surgery. He said it greatly decreases the nausea in recovery. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That sounds amazing! I would very much like my surgeon to allow that! Maybe I'll send him a MyChart message and ask once I get my official surgery time tomorrow.

Hey y’all! I’m booked for my surgery on June 18. Sending the best vibes to all of you going in tomorrow! Can’t wait to hear how it went.
I’m 35, 5’4” tall and started my preop diet last week at 300lbs. My doctor required me to do 3 weeks of shakes and 250cals of low glycemic veggies per day. It’s been challenging to find ways to prepare veggies that don’t have any fat or salt...love for some suggestions!

I had a coworker who told me she was on the track to do WLS and she had a dream where someone who had passed said the same thing and she didn't go through with the surgery!! Maybe it's a common dream to have?

Oh, and I'm scheduled for 6/17. (RNY - was gonna do sleeve but I decided on the RNY after talking a lot with my nutritionist and doing research)

Was supposed to be May 4th, but was postponed due to COVID-19. I was feeling pretty hopeless that entire month and a half when it was cancelled (cancelled late march..), so I gained some weight. Luckily, my surgeon said no more weight gain and we can still do the surgery. My insurance doesn't have any requirements but the 6 month weigh ins. I'm 16 days away and I"m pushing myself with eating more veggies, more Protein and drinking more Water. It's stuff I've done before, because I lost ~80lbs on Keto a year and some change ago, but gained it all back. I figured this time, I can do all those changes I made w/keto, and the new tool of the surgery and I should be set. 🤞

Do they allow for sprays? I love the butter substitute spray and some salt free Mrs Dash (several flavors) on Broccoli and sometimes asparagus. But I could eat the well steamed broccoli everyday. Thats quite a diet. Hang in there! I bet you'll lose a lot before surgery!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
