Still can't eat much 4 months post op

Recommended Posts

My bypass was done in December but I still can't eat much. I basically eat hummus, yogurt and cottage cheese because they are the only things I can keep down. I have pain when swallowing liquids or eating certain foods. I know with the first couple bites if I am going to tolerate a food item and most times I just give up and go without. I throw up at least 3 days a week and usually continue to throw up for hours.. long after my stomach is empty. Anyone else experience this? I had to cancel an appointment with my surgeon due to covid19 concerns ( I am immunosuppressed due to lupus. )

My daughter was having similar issues only 2 months out. They will probably want to do a barium swallow test on you. You really need to reach out to them and set up another appointment. My daughter's surgeon has an online system where you can talk directly to them or their assistants and discuss issues. You truly need to get this taken care of urgently. There could be an issue (possibly a leak involved) which could be very bad for you. Even if you do a telemed appointment with them and discuss, they can get you in for testing quickly probably.

However, what we did find out is that she was very dehydrated. We went to an infusion site (IV hydration location) and had fluids and B complex infusions done and within 30 minutes after, she was able to get down more fluids and more foods. You have to get yourself to a point where you're able to get down the 4 oz necessary at each meal.

Take care of yourself and do what you need to do to feel better. My daughter is immuno-suppressed as well, but these infusion sites are ran by nurses and EMT's. It is a very clean environment and they wear masks and if you have one, wear it as well. You will be ok. 🙂

Thank you for your reply. I drink a lot of Water, always have. But the last few days I have not been getting in 60 oz. Close, around 45 but still not enough. I will focus more on getting the full 60 oz. Had no idea that dehydration could cause pain when eating.

I had an upper gi and thankfully there is no leak or other issue. So there is that 😀

I would be very surprised if it was a leak this far out, but it could possibly be a stricture. They usually appear 1-3 months post-op (I know you're further out than that, but not by much). Hard to tell. Hopefully they can get you in or at least advise you on what to do.

No leak, I had an endo dilation (for a stricture) and an upper gi. I do have a check up that was postponed a few weeks thanks to corona. I am hoping to test out some theories before then so I can eliminate everything "easy". I was told that the dilation often needs to be repeated but that was much different, I would vomit up a sip of Water.

Thank you for replying!

I think, and this is my opinion - I am NOT a doctor, surgeon or a nurse, that this might be acids, inflamations or strictures comming out of the woods. It also can be Iron decifiency. Or just as simple as that yuor hormones have changed.

I have similar issues - and I went through a heap of blood test and gastrocopies recently. I have EOS and a polyp in my intestines, and some acids and galls. The bypassed section/loop seem to also be active in my guts.

Go have a checkup and consult your surgeon on this.

Thank you, I will look into it! The Iron thing is very interesting because I had bouts of anemia before surgery. Like way before but with the drastic diet changes, I would not be surprised.

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
