Is shooting for 10,000 steps too soon at this point?

Hi y’all,

I asked this question way far down in my other thread so I wanted to highlight it. I told my friend who had had sleeve surgery and had successfully lost about how much I’ve been pushing myself to walk. I’m day 12 today and feel really weak today and been pushing for 10k steps a day. I walked 4 miles on Friday and 3.3 miles yesterday and 2.8 miles on Thursday. I didn’t hit 10k steps on Thursday (6500) or Saturday (7200) but I did on Friday. Prior to surgery I averaged about 3000 steps a day.
She sent me Dr. Vhong videos (Dr. V as she call him) telling me to watch and he is saying I should be walking for sure, but not pushing myself this much. What are your thoughts? I appreciate your feedback and support sooo much!!

I was doing 10,000 steps by day 7. No weights or other stuff until later.

It's only too soon if your body feels like it's too soon.

If it is physically hurting you to do 10,000, try working up from 6,000 or 7,000. I can do 10,000 steps a day at 2 months out, but at 12 days, I was lucky to get 4,000. It's all up to the individual person, honestly.

Now I'm using a bike and walking every day, and incorporating dance into my routine.

Also remember that rest days ARE a thing, and you should take a day off just to let your muscles recuperate every once in a while, too. I workout 6 days a week now.

I watch Dr. V as well...I definitely wouldn't push. Do what you can COMFORTABLY.

I think I definitely did too much over the past few days considering my sedentary state for so long prior to surgery. I’m resting today and will try for more walking tomorrow.

Thanks for asking the question. I was wondering the same thing. Yesterday, was my first day actually trying to get steps and I only got to 6k.

Does it hurt your incisions? I found I had to wear the binder when I was walking more than just around the house.

@Stinkerbells2ndact my incisions hurt a little after walking a lot but nothing really bad. I was worried about sweating on them, but so far, so good. I have one that I guess was the “exit wound” as it’s bigger than the others and has a stitch poking out of it....it hurts some. I want to pull the stitch out, but that’s probably not a great idea. 😂

What does your surgeon about exercising timelines? Anything in the post op guidelines?

I was released from the hospital day 3 post-op and since then I've been walking between 10-20,000 steps a day (I did the same when I had the sleeve). I do get a little tired sometimes, but then I'll go home and have a big rest. FWIW, I was doing 20,000 steps because I was in Paris and did a lot of walking there - I'm sticking closer to the 10,000 mark now that I'm back home. I don't make it to 10,000 everyday, but I feel better getting out in the fresh air moving around that just sitting at home. To be fair, this is in line with what I was doing before surgery, so it's not like I'm pushing myself more than usual. This is usual for me.

However, as other people have said, everyone is different. It's important to listen to your body. If you feel tired or are in pain, then maybe dial it back a bit. If not, keep going!

My surgeon wants me to exercise. I told him I’d be walking and stretching. He said that’s good and we’ll talk about doing mor at my next appt.

So hard to not pick! Esp. Now that they are getting a little itchy. I don’t see any stitches, but the blobs of glue have semi-lifted and are buggin’!

Good for you for getting your move on. I only managed another couple miles with one small hill before I was d.o.n.e. and my belly has been a little sore this afternoon. Finally get to weigh in tomorrow since it’ll be 1 wk, so that’s exciting/nerve wracking. 😬

Perfect keep it up = I was insane moving walking and pushing it hard soon after surgery, I really think it was the key to my fast weight dropping

Same. I hit the ground running and never turned back. I Started walking constantly Day one and week 4 my dr cleared me to go back and to just listen to my body. It’s 8 months later and I run and lift weights 6-7 days a week since then. I workout HARD because I’m dedicated to my journey and to my results. A lot of people with be against this philosophy and sometimes I feel like ppl post Dr V so they can give themselves a reason to not give 100% but to each their own. Everyone’s journey is different and as long as you are headed towards goal and making the choices that work for you then you are doing great!!!

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
