Outpatient or hospital stay ? American Surgey Ctr.

Recommended Posts

Hello ... I just got my date of April 13 for surgery. It was going to be done at a hospital ( Saint Francis in Delaware) but now the scheduled at a surgical center instead and I was told I can be there only 23 hours? I am concerned because all of the classes and doctor appointments had been about hospital stay ? Possibly staying one to two nights. Now that it is a surgical center i am only allowed to stay at max 23 hours. How if i am sleeping from pain meds do they know there is a problem ? Maybe i am wrong but i thought is was major surgery ? Anyone else had theirs done at American Surgery Center in Delaware with Dr.Peters ? How was your experience ? Also, I had my colonoscopy there and the prep nurses were not very nice and made me very nervous and uncomfortable ... at that time i told my husband that god the surgery wont be here ... ;-( Now i am feeling really upset.

Could this be because of insurance? When my RNY was first approved it was only approved for outpatient (23 hours or less). My surgical coordinator appealed it and got me one night in the hospital.

1. It will be alot cheaper costs in the long run. 2. Im scheduled in a hospital and My dr told me I could expect to check in 1p on Thurs and be out Fri by 10am (around 22hrs). You will be fine.

I took 2 days in the hospital, but that's because the first pain reliever didn't relieve my pain. Most people are only overnight, so you should be okay.

I really think it depends on the doctor. My doctor told me to plan on 2 nights at the hospital but I am also have a hernia repaired at the same time that they do the RNY.

I think my surgery was 3 days/two nights in hospital, I’m pretty sure that was the timeline. I had my gallbladder removed at the same time. But my nutrition class had also said at least two nights. I have had some surgeries with major stitches and have them same day but can’t imagine having had gastric bypass surgery and leaving same day but perhaps my case was just different. I had a abdominal drain and catheter for all three days. But due to my chronic illness I unexpectedly was bed bound and couldn’t get up to walk the way most people can post surgery.

unless something comes up in surgery then home is usually the best place for recovery. But still seem strange since you’d think they need to allow some time to heal, make sure you are functioning well enough, and check for leaks. I would at least question the doctor about it.

@themonk4u I'm going through the same thing with my insurance. My surgeon requires 2 nights, and my insurance says that it can be done as Outpatient and that I can spend those two nights in "observation", which is still in hospital, but not admitted. Idk, it's weird but I think it's a common thing, try not to stress. I'm sure if you need more time, your office will go to bat with the insurance.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
