PLEASE HELP the skeptic in me. Doesn't starving = eventual weight gain??

1000 calories a day is a starvation diet Not a maintenance diet. This troubles me greatly. How can this be healthy long term? Meaning live to be 90 long term? Thank you for going to bat with me on this. I’m really having trouble with seeing how this is a forever option.






I recently read, and can't find, an article about real longevity as it relates to a restricted calorie diet and how the body naturally thrives on calorie restrictions when the diet is based on nutrient density and whole foods mostly plant and Protein based. Lots of talk about reversing chronic disease and inflammation metabolic syndrome and people living into their 90 and 100s and having health and energy using this method. Primarily low calorie and high nutrition density. Dr Joel Furman has some great books about this.


Yes, and I forgot to mention that I have intermittent fasting in my toolbox along with my sleeve and I feel like not only does the IF naturally restrict calories,but the other health benefits might greatly contribute to extending life span

Absolutely @Sheribear68! I too use IF as an additional tool for MM (maintenance mode). Works like a charm.

Yes you are right about the starving eventually putting on weight, but you have to take into consideration that any form of "obesity" is obesity, whether it be from eating too much junk food, or from starving too much, they're both the same demons just different outfits, and I personally believe that obesity is caused largely due to hormonal imbalances, all the above reasons mentioned like eating too much, eating too less, psychiatric meds, bariatric surgery is the cure, it cuts off the root of all these problems, you are saying that eating too less will put on weight but when you cut 75% of your stomach, you actually can't eat that much, so no technically, that only happens when your body goes into starvation mode, that's why its essential that you eat 6-8 small meals a day even after surgery. And not to forget, the countless number of problems that obesity brings along, diabetes, depression, back problems just to name a few, but it is a BIG problem. So I think that the benefits outweighs the negatives. Ta.

Omg! HCG diet! I did that and they had us max out at 500 calories a day. And the stupid shots! For me, in a nutshell, I'll never be a lean Protein and one bite of broccoli person. BUT I am now a 1 taco (real taco not taco bell) makes me full and happy for hours. No cravings. No denying food groups. Before, I could eat many tacos before being full and happy. Or deny myself any tacos and think about them until I was ravenous and head hungry and stomach hungry. For me, the surgery gave me my brain back. I'm able to make much better choices. I find I automatically skip the carbs most of the time because I am loving the "guts" of the sandwich much more than the filler (bread) . So a tiny portion of what I love once in awhile re-set my mindset of either being super strict/ super glutinous. I had no in-between before and now I do.

I'm a year out and definitely way beyond 700 calories a day. I need to get my head straight as lately Ive been in maintenance mode, eating things I shouldnt and have been at the same weight for many months. I never did lose hunger in any way. I wouldnt worry about the metabolism thing. Your body adjusts.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
