Has anyone started crossfit or similar class

Recommended Posts

I'm considering starting crossfit or a similar class but I haven't consistently worked out in years and I know I don't have much stamina or strength right now. However, in the past, this type of weight training based exercise is what I enjoy. Curious if others have done this and been successful when still 100+ lbs overweight and out of shape. OR, should I wait?

I am a die hard CrossFitter. I LOVE it. I am 5 years post VSG. I tried CF many times but was shy and had serious gym anxiety and kept quitting.

I finally found a box that I love. I totally embrace CF as a way of life. I have made incredible friends there.

EVERY SINGLE movement can be modified. Can't do a push up? Do one on the wall. Can't burpee? Use a jump box. Can't throw a wall ball? Use a volleyball. There are options for every movement. And you can just tell the coach ahead of time, they will help you figure out what you can do.

What I love about CF is the incredible support there. Everyone cheers more for the LAST person even more than the FIRST person finishing!

EVERYONE there had a first day. Don't forget that.

Thanks Mi75. I think I'll schedule a drop by at a local CF studio and talk to the coach. See if I get a good sense of their willingness to help modify.

I haven't done it, and I am a lower BMI to start with.. but mi75 is correct, every movement in these types of classes can be modified! Just like when I returned to Pilates... last year I couldn't do most of what I used to do. When I went back to Pilates post-op, I needed to modify a lot of movements (still recovering from abdominal surgery). As I regain strength and endurance I can do more. Crossfit is no different principal wise. Start off doing what you can do, modify the movements that you need to modify, and as you gain strength and endurance you will be able to do more. Getting a personal trainer to help you get started is probably a good idea. They can see what you are capable and create a plan for you specific to you and your abilities and goals. They can also teach you the modifications that you might need to make in a regular class. And any good teacher will encourage you to make modifications in their class if it means you will participate and maintain your safety.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
