Pureed Stage Nightmare

Recommended Posts

So I started the pureed foods stage today and I swear everything went to hell. I've been experiencing pain and burning after eating and can't seem to figure out why. I'm following the instructions on how to puree and am not eating anything with chunks. I'm taking my time between bites and am using my SWLC's (surgical weight loss center) recommended recipes in addition to waiting 30 min. before and after I eat before drinking Water again. Is this normal? Is it because it's a new stage? I don't know. I just know today sucked big time.

I left a voicemail with the SWLC. Has anyone else ever experienced this with the pureed stage?

I skipped the puree for the most part as it was literally ruining the tastes of foods. I did an extra week of full liquid and added in some thicker Soups. Softs things really start to open up but you will find out what type digestive hell you are in for. eggs are rough on a lot of people for example.

I was told if that happens, it means to go back a step. I think like @Brent701 I'd probably go back a step to thick liquids. I'd try things like kefir then thinned down yogurt (Greek, fat free plain) mixed with bananas and cream or strawberries and cream or peaches and cream Premier Protein. Very delicious, not as sweet, etc. But make it more of a runny kefir thickness yogurt Soup. Then maybe do blended cream of chicken using fat free Fairlife Milk. And try those for a few more days. We heal only as quickly as we heal and it sounds like you have a lot of inflammation going on.

Water and hydration are KING! Even over Protein. Staying well-hydrated is the key to diet progression IMHO. Cuz it makes the inflammation go down and makes food slide through your new tool easier. ((hugs)) Let us know what the doc says!

TO early you body is saying F@#ck food - Slow down there is no set time line - Do liquid and very very slow pureed,

Pureed does not mean take a apple pie and Nutra bullet it, Use very light foods and go at it slowly,

Early out there is still a lot of inflammation and you might have to take food stages a bit slower. Also you fill a little faster than with liquid and it could be a bite too much food causing the burning, or it could be acid reflux. Just take it very very slowly. Keep a chart to see if it is a particular food combo or time of day. And if burning persists get the doc to prescribe a PPI.

I skipped puree stage and just continued with full liquids during this time as well (2 extra weeks worth). Not so much because of intolerance, but because the "ewwww" factor. I had purreed some beef, and I was like, um, NO THANKS.

So how long were you on liquids total for those that took it slower? Thanks!

Here was what I did:

  • 1 day clear fluids
  • 1 week full fluids
  • 2 weeks pureed ...did 2 more weeks of full fluids instead
  • 1 week minced food
  • 3 weeks soft food
  • Cleared for everything, as tolerated

The nutritionist at the SWLC did it a little different:

-Three days Clear Liquids

-One week and three days full liquids

-One month pureed foods

-One month soft foods, then cleared for everything as tolerated

Today I altered some of the recipes and was able to tolerate them. The foods I had yesterday had some pepper in them, so it looks like that could've been the culprit.

Hi! I haven't heard back from the doctor yet. I altered my pureed recipes today and that seemed to do the trick. At this point, the only frustration I'm having now is I'm not really losing any weight yet. I managed to lose some the first week and a half but now it seems I'm stuck. I hadn't weighed myself since last Thursday at my first post-op follow-up. Today I did and I'm very sad to see only 1 pound gone.

You were right. I took out the pepper and nothing bothered me today. Thanks!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
