I was approved for surgery. Good vitamins and protein shakes?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I'm pretty excited. Literally took my insurance one day to approve my surgery. I am so nervous and excited at the same time. My surgery is scheduled for 3/13/2020 and I plan taking the week off after. I start the 10 day pre-op diet on 3/2.

I worry though as I'm trying to find Protein Shakes I can drink. I'm use to Premier Protein as my mom had the surgery and they actually taste pretty good but I'm afraid my stomach is having some issues with them.

The nutritionist I spoke to said to try a plant based Protein Shake, called Evolve. I did and.... wish I didn't. Lol.

Also, anyone recommend any good Vitamins? I see the sale on the website for the one a day for $99 the year. Anyone use these or tried any of the Protein juices from the site?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

I used premier after my sleeve surgery but find my stomach won’t tolerate them after my recent revision to bypass. I highly recommend trying these samples.< br /> https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/syntrax-nectar-protein-powder-trial-sizes-17-flavors-to-choose-from?vec=eyJ2ZVRwIjoiRk9SVU0iLCJ2clRwIjoiTU9TVF9QT1BVTEFSIiwidnJJcCI6IjEifQ%3D%3D

my favorite is the chocolate truffle and I tolerate them very well. I would be Leary of a one per day Vitamin. Iron and Calcium will counteract each other in certain doses. Also check with your team as they may require you to start on chewables. I take the Bariatric Fusion. Bottle says take 4 per day but my dr assures me that if I take two twice per day I will get the same results.
I like that I don’t need any extra d3, iron or calcium with these.

good luck!

First off, congratulations!

My clinic gave me a list of approved Vitamins (and Protein supplements). I'm currently taking the one a day ProCare Multivitamin with Iron in it because I was having trouble with my Celebrate chewable Multivitamins. They made me nauseous to the point of nearly becoming non-compliant. opurity and Bariatric Advantage vitamins were also recommended. I'm currently taking Celebrate calcium citrate chews and they're pretty good. Getting bored with the fruit mix I got, but I have a bag of caramel ones I'll use next.

I would mostly focus on samples of powders right now. Not a giant amount, though. I second Syntrax. I prefer the Sweets line (the traditional chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry (plus Cookies and cream)). A lot of people like or can only tolerate the nectar line (which are more fruit juice type). You could also get a sampler at Unjury for $30. It includes two packets of all of their flavors, a thermometer, two premade shakes, and a shaker bottle. Most of my shakes since surgery have been Unjury Chocolate Classic in unsweetened almond milk or Kroger Carbmaster skim milk. (Oh, and while it's not listed, Unjury will also include Opurity Vitamin samples in their sampler pack.) Both Unjury and Syntrax are lactose free.

In terms of RTD/premade shakes, I like Premier, GNC Total Lean, and Fairlife Core the most. GNC and Fairlife are often sold individually. Fairlife milk (and the shakes) are also lactose free if you find you are or become lactose intolerant.

If you find you can't tolerate milky shakes, protein Water is a thing. Protein 2O and Premier Protein water are popular. Or you could use unflavored protein in Crystal Light. I use Unjury's unflavored protein and add it to Soups and broths for added protein.

I use the Bariatric Pal Vitamins. I like them because it is only 1 capsule per day. I also take a B-12 in the morning. In the evening, I take my calcium citrate capsule (found these at Sprouts) and Vitamin D3. That's it.

I used Premier Protein shakes prior to surgery and they were fine. Then after surgery, they were too sweet. Then a while later they were fine. Then I went to a plant based shake called Orgain which is available at costco.

Before the surgery I loved the Protein Water in all flavors. After the surgery I couldn’t tolerate them. I like the muscle milk, chocolate and vanilla, I like making coffee and mixing it the night before, refrigerate over night, and cold chocolate coffee for Breakfast is the best! Bulletproof unflavored Protein Powder is good too. I’m about to switch to plant based protein powder and hoping to find one I like too.

I have used Bariatric Advantage chewy bites for the last nine months or so:

https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/multivitamins/products/bariatric-advantage-multivitamin-chewy-bites-available-in-4-flavors

I have only tried strawberry/watermelon and really like them.

I had originally used tablets but couldn't take them after surgery. They had to be ground to a powder, and taking them that way was completely disgusting no matter how I tried to disguise the taste. I then tried to chewable tablets and found them disgusting as well (particularly the smell). The chewy bites have worked well for me. (I also take the Calcium chewy bites.)

As for Protein Shakes, I'm also a big fan of Premier Protein, especially the caramel flavor. I love to put it in coffee, but I also drink it straight. I did not find it too sweet after surgery.

If you have the time I have not found any pre made shakes that i think are great - You do not have to buy the pre made you can make your own - powders of Protein and Vitamin powders and almond milk or other high end healthy milks - Fruits and a nutra bullet- I find the different milks from whole foods or sprouts to be a much better shake

But it takes time and energy Advantage is you can pump them up big time with as much protein and Vitamins and fruit as you want -

For this whole year post-surgery I've been using premade chocolate GNC Lean shakes. I don't like using the powders, I prefer the premade. I also use GNC Vitamins, soft-chews and they've not made me nauseous or anything because before surgery whenever I'd take regular vitamins, they'd make me sick to my stomach. These don't.

Great info! I have an a lot of people that felt that their taste changed after bariatric surgery. I know one who really could not stand the taste of Water enhancers afterwards. Of course people have such a variety of preferences, but it is nice to get some consensus (saves time and money!).

Hi, after surgery I wasn’t able to tolerate the Premier Protien skakes so I switched to Muscle Milk 32 gram Protein non-dairy shakes. Very tasty. I also set auto delivery up on Amazon Prime which saves me a few dollars. In my area the shakes can be found at all grocery stores and big chains like Target with the best price being costco. For Vitamins I like Bariatric fusion and it is actually what my NUT recommends. Again, I have it on auto delivery. I’m four months post-op and I take two vitamins twice a day for a total of four.

I buy on Amazon, better prices

Me, too - I have Amazon deliver my " Purely Inspired Organic Protein" shakes once a month via subscription - way cheaper than the local store prices. I like them - they are plant-based, 120 calories, low carb, and 20 grams of Protein. Considering that I use one a day in my morning green smoothie (no fruit) it would get expensive if I had to pay more.

I also get "Pure Protein" ones that have 30 grams of protein - like the chocolate flavor and use it in my morning coffee but the local store prices are good so I buy them there. I take the BariMelts Vitamins also delivered by Amazon on a schedule. Good luck!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
