How much soup is too much soup...?

Recommended Posts

Greetings! I’m just shy of two weeks post-op (VSG @ mayo Clinic) and per their nutrition guide I’ve introduced low-fat creamy Soup into my diet. Not gonna lie, it’s a very welcome change since the first week.

As of today, I’m able eat about 3/4 of a coffee cup (I’m guessing volumewise it’s a little under a cup). Overall, I feel fine after eating it (i.e. - no “stuck food” feeling or anything).

Should I be able to intake/handle that much at this point in my recovery? It seems like more than I should be able to, but I imagined I’d feel gross if that was the case.

Thanks, All!

Soup is a great go to , but I have found that it really goes right through the stomach. So I have avoided cream Soups because they tend to be high in calories with no "filling" sensation. That said, a cup of good soup in the evening seems to fill the old void of Doritos and a couple beers

liquids tend to go right on through. When you get to the solid food stage is when you will start to feel restriction.

I'm 1 wk post vsg. If liquids and Soups "go right thru" are the nutrients being absorbed?

When I was on the liquid stage, I could finish an entire small Campbells 5oz can, which comes out to 10oz when adding the can of water/milk. I'd be able to finish it all before it got cold. I'm now measuring/weighing everything on soft foods….that and getting at least 64oz of Water daily I'm fortunately having zero cravings to snack. On liquids, I'd down a Tomato Soup in a tall coffee mug.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
