@lisa - I had the exact same symptoms this morning. A raging headache, dark urine, extreme nausea. My doctor gave the same advice - focus on fluids, forget about Protein Shakes for now. He even suggested having some watered down apple juice. It’s definitely helped. I flew home today, and the last 30 minutes were awful. Constant turbulence that was so bad that my Fitbit was counting it as steps. 😮🤢Needless to say, it took a while for my tummy to settle down.

I’d highly recommend for anyone flying out after that you take gravel and have someone pull/push your suitcase for you. Mine wasn’t heavy, but after 20 minutes of walking with it, it felt like I had done a billion sit ups.

My Dr doesn’t want me having Protein for a week after surgery. It’s all about fluids. Keep the kidneys functioning. Hydration and kidney function is more important than protein in the first week. I hope this helps!!

That’s the same with me. Just Clear Liquids for one week and then the next week I start full liquids and start working on protein.

Hey everyone I have a question. Probably TMI so I apologize in advance. I’m on day 6 of my 10 day pre-op diet. It’s not liquids only like others. I can have a certain amount of fruit, yogurt and sandwich meat per day for each meal. I can also have unlimited amounts of foods like pickles, celery, cucumbers and so on. But y’all, I have had straight diarrhea for the past several days. Did anyone else experience this? I don’t feel sick to my stomach but I have diarrhea several times a day. Just wondering if this is a normal thing.

Any drastic change in diet can cause bowel Changes as well. But you might wanna give your doctor a call to see if they want you to take anything to slow things down. You certainly don't wanna jeopardize your surgery date. I was so sorry to hear about your caffeine withdrawal. I know that can be a bear.Hope that's resolved for you. Fortunately I decaffeinated about 25 years ago. And I now don't tolerate caffeine whatsoever. I have to be careful With tea, Aspirin products, chocolate, and even sodas. We're getting closer to our surgery. Hang in there.

You might need to add in some more approved foods with fibre in them. That helped me a lot during my 3 week pre-op. BMs were still very soft and loose, but not so runny or hitting so quickly.

Oh no! I am guessing it is the change in diet, as others said, but I would let your surgeon know. You don't want to dehydrate.

@DB in AZ ok. I will give them a call. It’s late in the day so not sure if I will hear back today but maybe Monday. I am doing so much better regarding my caffeine withdrawal. I honestly feel amazing and it’s so empowering to know that I’m not dependent on that anymore.

@ResaRoo I’m going to check if there is a way to get more Fiber in with my diet. I need to do some research in food labels. Lol

So my surgeon’s office just back with me. They said it’s most likely from the diet. They said if I want to take Imodium, I can but that the diarrhea won’t effect surgery and to just stay hydrated. So I guess that’s that. Lol. Thank y’all for your help.

Has my surgery on 2/13. They say left shoulder pain is a sign of a leak. I am having shoulder pain but I feel like it's more gas than anything. My only symptoms are abdominal pain and shoulder pain (in both shoulders). Should I be concerned? I have reached out to my doctors office.

5th day post op and I am feeling so much better. Hydrating really made the difference, and today I can actually take normal size swallows, so it is not taking forever to get one cup of Fluid in me.

How is everyone else doing out there in February surgery land? I know we had a couple of people scheduled for 2/14.

So sorry you are experiencing this! Could certainly be gas pain, but good thing you reached out. I am sure your surgeon's office told you if the pain gets intense or you have changes in your ability to breath call 911. For me the walking helped with the gas immensely.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
