What was your diet pre op like?

Recommended Posts

Mine is a clear liquid diet for three days + milk. I'm in my second day and honestly I'm so hungry. I was losing weight prior to surgery but with the amount of milk I'm drinking I've been stuck on the same weight these 3 days. I prefer to eat a tuna salad that actually fills me up at lunch, than a carton of milk that does nothing for my appetite. But I know I have to stick with doctors' orders. But it sucks.

Pure liquids yes it sucks a few tips

Bone Broth fills you up drink it often and find something to pass the time to get your mind off food

TV, Movie, Work, Sex, Dog, go outside, Totally do stuff you never do and then when it gets really bad sleep just got to sleep

Also going to get yelled at by this one but Vodka and WIne are liquids - Really helped me

I did 2 weeks of 3 shakes a day (Optifast powder + water).

The second and third day was rough, but was smooth sailing after that....hang in there!

No Pre-Op diet here. My group recently changed protocol due to no evidence of any long term success/failure based on pre-op diet. Your sensation of hunger, and fill will be completely different post-op, therein making pre-op plan, little more than a nuisance.

Interesting, because the pre-op diet is all about shrinking and softening the liver, not about future success rates etc

The pre-op diet is low calorie which helps the liver shrink very quickly so when the surgeons try to get to the stomach which sits behind the liver they can move it out of the way and this practice is used world wide as people do get on the table and then have their op cancelled because their liver is too big or too stiff to move out of the way making surgery very high risk.

remember it isn't for weight loss it is ALL about your liver being pliable and smaller :)

Mine seems so much more complicated. I do 2 Protein Shakes per day; One with more Protein. 2 Snacks, which can be another Protein Shake, but can be 2 eggs, or 1/4 cup hummus and 1/2 cup non-starch veg; 3/4 c. cottage cheese, etc. They are slightly different from each other. Finally 1 meal consisting of 4 oz protein and up to 2 c. non starch veg (raw) or 1 cup cooked with 1 tbl salad dress or mayo or tbl avocado.

Black coffee or tea (can have caffeine until after surgery) plus at least 48 oz of Water or sugar free liquid.

I'm on day 1 of 14; pretty hungry to tell the truth; I have the "meal" and 1 Protein Drink left.

So far I have taken in 390 calories today; protein shake 120; Protein Bar (snack 1) 200 cal; 2 hard boiled eggs, 70 calories. No wonder I am hungry!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
