Hello, My name is Jenny and I just started the process of getting cleared for the Sleeve surgery. My anticipated surgery date if all goes well is January 2020. My ask of the community is if there is anyone on here that has had the sleeve surgery and are 6 months or more post op to please share your post of journey with me. I am set on getting this done to improve my quality of life but I want to make sure I can prepare for the good, the bad, and the gross lol

No need to filter your content with me I want to hear it all.

Appreciate your help.

Thank you!!

Excited for you. January will be here before you know it. You will be well taken care of by your team. Read through the forum. (Search box on the top left) it will help you with the good and bad stories.

Sleeved 5 years ago. Unfortunately, it took a major health crisis to admit my weight was slowly killing me. The same year I lost my mother to cancer. I investigated bariatrics to get my health in order. I was ready to get this done. More than willing to go through pain to get my life back.

I had prior surgeries and experience childbirth. I had a good reference of pain. The side incision took longer to heal (its where they remove the stomach) Medications managed pain. I bounced back and healed quickly. I had a drain for a few days. Yep, it was gross. Took a deep breath and he pulled the line out and it was over.

I can’t say I had anything bad experiences with surgery. My health issues are all resolved. It was all worth it and I have no regrets.

Wish you the best!

Jenn

Hey Jenny,

I'm only 3 1/2 months out, but I'll let you know about my journey so far and hopefully that'll help some lol.

I have always been a short and chubby guy, but made the decision in February that I wanted to change it. After talking to my coworkers who have had the surgery (one bypass and one sleeve), I decided to look into it and get a consult. My doctor suggested/approved me for the sleeve surgery. My date was set for July 2 and I all the other stuff (psych eval, bloodwork, etc.) were all done rather quickly and were no problem. I didn't have to do any pre-op diet or anything, but started to practice what they expect for afterwards (smaller meals, smaller bites, chewing 30 times, no drinking 30 min before or after, etc).

I had my surgery early July 2 and it went well. I had the earliest appointment and my best friend drove me in and stayed with me. Basic pre-op stuff and then went in the room and woke up like 2 hours later in recovery (4 small incisions). They had me up and walking pretty much right after I had a room and they had me walk every hour or so and sip Water. After a day, I was home and starting my journey.

After surgery, you're just having fluids like water and a small amount of clear Soups (you're honestly not all that hungry for a little bit). Then you're on the fuller liquids for a little while (make sure you get your Protein Shakes in you cuz it helps you heal better). Next, you can eat a little bit of food, but its mostly unbearable stuff lol. I got by this by having small low-sodium V8 cans as sort of a Tomato soup...really enjoyed that. After that, you can finally incorporate normal food in which was nice.

Eating is def different now, it needs to be slowed down and sometimes it sucks not being able to drink water with your dry chicken lol. I get by by having a good amount of 4 oz Veggie burgers with Protein that my mom found on QVC. Haven't really had any stomach probs since either, which is really good considering life before surgery lol. 33 down now and people say they can see the difference.

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
