Medication question from a newbie

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I’m two months pre op right now with several comorbidities that require daily medications.

While I am hopeful to get off of all or at least most of my medications, I don’t know when that will happen.

Do all meds come in liquid form? I can’t figure out how on earth the handful of pills I am presently taking can be taken with a post op pouch!

Also, if you used a cpap, how long after surgery did you get off of it?

Thanks.

I was off the cpap within 2 1/2 months post sleeve surgery and off Omeprazole for GERD and high blood pressure medicine within 3 months. I didn't have any trouble swallowing pills.

Not all meds come in liquid form, but SOME (Not extended release) can be crushed. Your Doctor should work with you to find the best method for each of your meds and alternatives, if needed.

I stopped my B.P. meds the day I had surgery. Normal B.P. now. :)

Gerd meds will be done in 3 more weeks, hopefully.

CPAP- don't know yet. I will likely get a new sleep study before years end.

I take about 14 pills a day. I don’t crush them. That was too biter!!! I just Take them with my morning Protein Drink or Water.

I still need the cpap. I tried sleeping without it for a few nights & my husband says I still have apnea. I have lost 60 pounds.

It is possible you might not even have to/ need to take them post surgery.

Every Doctor is different. Mine has his patients take them for 3 months after surgery as a protection for healing the new staple line and connections. That is the only reason, at this point, I am still taking them at all. I hope to have no issues once I wean off of it... we will see.

I can tell you the relief from GERD has been really, really awesome for myself post bypass.

Good luck to you in your journey! :)

I stopped making my lisinopril/HCTZ (blood pressure) immediately. The same for Metformin (pre-diabetes).

My CPAP after a few weeks.

I'm still on my benzodiazepines, anti-depressants, and pain meds (morphine).

I never had to substitute a liquid form for any of my many horse pills. I took big pills right out of the gate and never had a problem. I've heard that's not the case for everyone, however, so I'd be prepared to consult with a pharmacist to find out if other forms exist and then follow up with your doctor to make changes, if necessary.

My daughter is a PharmD. If you send me a list of your meds, I can ask her what other forms they come in for you.

Oops. I meant "taking" my lisinopril and Metformin, not "making". I'm not Walter White.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
