post op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm 5 days post op. Since my stomach can only hold 4 oz at a time, does that mean I can only measure out 1/2 cup of liquids for each meal? How often can I drink 1/2 cup of liquids and not overfill my stomach? for instance, I have the Premier Protein clear that is 16 oz or 2 cups. How long should it take me to drink that? Do I just sip on one constantly until it's gone or do I measure it out 1/2 cup at a time? How long should it take me to drink the 1/2 cup? This is hard! I hope I'm making sense.

Liquids tend to flow right through, so those restrictions don't really apply (is your sleeve really 4 oz - that's a big sleeve for a VSG?) Some will have significant inflammation in their stomach for a while, so things don't flow too well, but others have little and liquids are pretty easy. I had no problem sipping away a bowl of broth (6-8 oz?) and a juice box in a sitting (half hour, maybe?) in the hospital; when my wife went through this, she could barely down her nominal stomach size of Protein Drink in one sitting.

Our basic goal was to sip an ounce every 5 minutes - some could do better than that, others not so much. For the Protein Shakes, I usually considered 8 oz to be a "meal" and used as many, at 25-30g Protein each, as I needed to get my protein numbers for the day (typically only one or two, but we had other protein options to play with then, too, as we weren't limited to just liquids) The rest of the time between meals was spent sipping Water until those numbers were hit.

Thank you. Your response helps me a lot! I'm still trying to figure this all out.

Liquids are different from foods, so you don't have to worry so much about size. Sip, sip, sip all day long. It takes me about 45 minutes to drink my 14 oz Protein Shake in the mornings

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
