OCC patients; seeking input

looking at OCC for VSG. my red flag is visiting hours ending at 4pm and no family allowed to stay overnight with you in hospital / clinic. it’s odd.

anyone who had surgery at OCC have issue with this?

i also read some people state that the payment was sketchy in that credit cards aren’t taken and wanting cashier checks? is this the case?

ortiz is board certified and clinic is joint commission compliant. strict visiting hours are odd though.

lots of + reviews for dr. illan... i can find info on the facility and it doesn’t seem he’s board certified bariatric surgeon.

thanks in advance for any info-

I was sleeved 5/21. By dr Ariel Ortiz. Wonderful facility. The visiting hrs didn't bother me or my husband. We both need rest. Absolutely no issues. I'm an RN and did lots of research. No problems with payment. Cashiers check no problems

I’m a RN as well and visitation hours are a thing of the past. It’s outdated and just raises red flag that support person isn’t allowed.

I was also informed that some patient rooms are semi-private. This is a red flag to me.

I asked what the RN to patient ratio was and I did not get an answer. Do you know from your experience?

Are there doctors in clinic at night?

Should a patient code what is the response team composed of?

If patient needs ICU care is that care provided in facility or is patient transferred? If transferred to what hospital?

0700 discharge day 1 post-op; did physician round and do head to toe exam?

Do you mind sharing info? Thank you!!

Hi there,

i had surgery through BariatricPalMX and Dr. Illan in December of 2016. He is definitely Board Certified and a very good surgeon. You can have someone go with you and stay with you.

Thanks for the info Bill. I did do further research on Dr. Illan and was his accreditations and memberships. I don’t see VSG listed as subspecialty or clinical area of practice on the FACS.org website:

Subspecialties and Areas of Clinical Concentration

  • Bariatric (Severe Obesity) Procedures
    • Bariatric (Severe Obesity) Procedures
    • biliopancreatic diversion
    • gastric banding
    • jejunoilial bypass
    • laparoscopic gastric banding
    • laparoscopic gastric bypass
    • roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Is this procedure one that he performs often and just isn’t listed? I also saw

Oasis Hospital
Tijuana, BCN
Active
08/2016—Present

Hospital Regional No.1 IMSS
Tijuana, BCN
Active
01/2011—Present

listed as affiliated hospitals. Can you clarify where his surgeries are performed?

I appreciate your prompt responses!

Hi,

He definitely does do VSG. Maybe it’s just not listed as a subspecialty. And the surgeries are done at BariatricPal Hospital.

I am scheduled at OCC for November 26th for a gastric sleeve. I'm so excited, can't wait. They may not be the cheapest, but the reviews, credentialing, and excellent customer service make up for it. You get what you pay for.

I was sleeved there on Monday! Excellent facility, surgeons, doctors and staff. I was so well cared for. I was up and walking within 2 hours of surgery. The 4pm limit on guests was fine. I got to know my sleeve mates better, walking the halls, encouraging one another. I never felt alone for a second. I feel really good, with very little pain. I’m learning to balance between drinking too much and not drinking enough. Today I passed the barium leak test and passed with flying colors. Tomorrow I head home. All is well!

My experience was much like yours. Dr Ariel Ortiz is a great surgeon. I've lost 52 lb since sleeved 5/21. 204 to 148
That is a great result! I'll do everything I can to be that successful!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
