Waiting for approval

Recommended Posts

The hospital submitted my paperwork today for insurance approval of the surgery. I’m equal parts excited and terrified. I just got a huge promotion and am overwhelmed at work, so the timing isn’t the best. I’ve been in the bariatric surgery program since January, but for some reason I still feel unprepared for what life will really be like post surgery. I’m scared about the loss of food. Did anyone else here have that same fear? How’s it going?

I think we all are somewhat fearful of losing our relationship with food, however you will be able to eat, just in smaller portions.

I wouldn't trade the food to go back to my failing health.

I went through the same emotions and honestly nothing prepared me for how my relationship to food would change. I do miss eating the way I used to but I'm glad for the restriction that prevents me from doing it. You'll feel frustrated at times like when you go out to a nice dinner and can't eat much of it. There is an emotional learning curve but it's so worth it. I feel like I've traded one joy for another but food only gave me an intermittent joy followed by sorrow and regret. The restriction gives me joy every day that I hop on the scale and joy from seeing my health and quality of life improving. I chose the greater joy and I'm sure you'll feel the same. Good luck 😊

I was "lucky" in that respect because I've never liked food. I just really don't like most foods. I was existing on Cookies and chocolate and sweets for all my meals. So the surgery really helped me learn how to stop eating those foods and focus on real food and learn how to eat food. It's a struggle and I only eat a few foods, but I do it. You'll have a plethora of foods to choose from post-op, so don't worry.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
