How long does it take to poop after surgery? Are poops different - I've read some awful things! Thanks in advance!

Thanks ... did you have to stay in the hospital until you pooped?!

No, I was actually home within 24 hrs! I really hate hospitals!

8 days ... it was unpleasant! I suggested adding benefiber to your liquids as soon as possible

It took over a week for me as well. And it was after days of trying various techniques to coax it out. Those were dark days. 😰

I've pooped every day since the day coming home from the hospital after surgery and never had a problem.

Now I see why they told me to start Miralax (stool softener) 3 days prior to surgery

I pooped maybe 24 hours after surgery. I haven't had a problem. Once of my prescriptions was for stool softeners but I didn't need it.

Milk of magnesia works the best... well at least for me.

I had my first poop the day after surgery and everyday until 2 weeks post op. Then ended up having to go to the hospital because I was plugged up.

2 weeks for me but I wasn't constipated, just nothing to poop out! 2 weeks liquid before going in, then 2 weeks of drip only because I couldn't keep any liquid in, so once home and finally on full fluids then things started happening.

Not going when there is nothing there isn't Constipation, not being able to go when you need to and it is hard/dry/ painful IS constipation.

Still on pureed food so going about twice a week now. :D

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
