Exactly my experience. 2 nights in hospital. Very nauseous on day 1 post-op. Also had the leak test before leaving.

I did not have a leak test, at least not while conscious. I have heard some doctors doing it while your out. I'll have to ask one of these days. I did spend one night though.

Never heard of outpatient bariatric surgery! Glad it worked out well for you. I spent 2 nights in the hospital because I was not allowed anything by mouth for 24 hours. No leak test done though. Interesting how surgeons are so different!

I had my sleeve at around 12 noon and went home at 8 pm. I was walking, sipping and peeing and that was good enough for them. I have not had any problems and I hate hospitals so it was best for me. I have noted that it is fairly rare but my surgeon does all of his as outpatient though many stay overnight and leave before 24 hours post op.

I had it done as an outpatient. Went back to dr the next am to have drain removed.

Had VSG outpatient with Dr Borland in New Iberia,LA. Did surgery on a Monday late morning, discharged to a local hotel Monday afternoon. Dr Borland made hotel visits on Monday and Tuesday evenings around 6pm to check on me. If all is well head home on Wednesday morning. Sleeve was about a month ago with no issues, especially as my situation was compounded by a torn ACL about 2 months before surgery.

Not staying in the hospital greatly reduces the cost for self-pay patients.

Maybe the standard varies by state or something, but it seems the standard for the majority of surgeons in my area is 2 nights in the hospital. According to my surgeon, previously the standard was 1 night, and they saw too many patients coming back due to dehydration within 24hrs. I'm for sure glad I had my 2 night stay.

I stayed in the hospital for a day. Insurance cleared me for 3 days just in case. I would not have left the day of the surgery, way to much pain.

Technically mine was “outpatient” because I stayed in the hospital less then 24 hours. My surgery was at 1pm and I had left the next morning around 11am. So I think that is considered outpatient even though I stayed overnight. I had bare minimal pain, if I would even consider it pain, just was very gassy. They gave me liquid Tylenol Codeine but I didn’t even use it.

I stayed in the hospital for one night. I had a PCA (push button pain medication) for that night and I needed it. I couldn't even drink Water that first night and it would have been impossible for me to take pain medication at home. I was discharged the next day but I really could have used another night because I had major nausea. I would take the pain medication (broken into pieces) and throw it up immediately. I called my surgeon and he suggested I crush the pill and mix it into pudding and take it that way. That worked and I was fine from that point on.

Had mine outpatient. I was released within 3 hours of surgery. I was perfectly fine and happy to be home sleeping in my own bed the rest of the day, minus the hourly walks I got up for.

I’ve heard of it. I wasn’t awake for my leak test, if I had one. As long as you have someone at home watching you who can take you back if necessary, should be fine. I have a law degree and if you have someone helping you, in my opinion, this does not violate “duty of care.”
