The first few months

I am curious how much weight most loose in the first 5/6 months after surgery. I'm trying to decide if I want to have this procedure or not. Also were you required to do the weight loss before approval?

Does your surgeon’s office offer a seminar on all the different types of surgeries? I would start there. Check with your insurance and your surgeon to see if they require pre surgery weight loss.

Average weight loss:

50% of your weight with Lap Band surgery

60% of your weight with gastric sleeve

70% of your weight with gastric bypass

LAP BAND SUCCESS RATE
47%
GASTRIC SLEEVE SUCCESS RATE
80%
GASTRIC BYPASS SUCCESS RATE
85%
DUODENAL SWITCH SUCCESS RATE
95%

Hi! I had the band for 11 yrs n just had it taken out about a year ago cuz arnd my 7th yr with it; I started having lots of problems where I became anemic, lots of heart burn, throwing up with certain foods n pain due to band moving with certain exercises/stretches. All these issues were off n on for about 4 yrs.

Overall, I lost a total of 60 pounds with it. What made me take the band out was due to getting a Tummy Tuck n the port started giving me lots of problems arnd the incision not healing/closing n this just added to my other issues with it. So, I finally got frustrated n decided to remove it. I should’ve gotten the gastric sleeve cuz it’s never a good idea to have a foreign object in ur body cuz sooner or later the body will start to reject it n problems will arise. But, whatever u end up getting, make sure it’s the right choice, we’ll worth it n ur not going to regret.

I'm 3 months out and have lost 50 pounds. You can't look at # of pounds, though, in comparison, because a person starting out at 450 pounds is going to lose more weight in pounds than a person starting out at 250 pounds. You have to look at percentages. I've lost about 32% of my excess weight in 3 months. My insurance didn't require six months of medical weight management first or requirement to lose weight before surgery, but most of them do. Does your surgeon's office have a free seminar for you to attend to address most of these issues?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
