LBS In Ft Worth Texas?

Recommended Posts

Has anybody had the surgery performed by Dr. Adam Smith or Dr. Craig Farrara at the LBS Center for Bariatrics in Ft. Worth? My husband and I went to their seminar last weekend and are very excited about the possibilities, but don't know much about the doctors. If anyone has any success stories or general info on your experience with them (good or bad please!!), I would appreciate hearing it! Thanks!

I was banded by Dr. Adam Smith on July 12, 2007. He was wonderful through the whole process and he would always take the time to answer my many questions, which is very important to me. I have never had a fill with Dr. Smith it has always been Dr. Ferrara or the other new guy. All of my experices have been good. I am down 67lbs so I am very HAPPY!!!

thanks Akat! Congrats on your success!! Are their offices hard to get into for fills, etc? Ferrara did the seminar...but after researching him, realize he hasn't been doing it long so it kinda worries me. Did you check into any other doctors before choosing them? Thanks!

It has never been hard for me to get an appointment. I always make a appointment for my next fill while I am in the offive getting one. Then if I don't need a fill I can always cancel and not have to wait. Dr. Smith was really the only doctor I researched. I went to his semminar and was inspired by him because he had the surgery himself, and I was much more comfortable with him because he had the procedure done to.

thanks! I am happy to hear you had a good experience with him. If we go with LBS, I think we want to go with Smith, too. It seems Ferrera only has like year of actual solo experience...even though he's been doing it with Smith. I'm sure he's a fine doctor...but he's young, has never had it done, and is actually a vascular surgeon by trade. I dunno....I think I'll research some other doctors in general just to be sure. With all the Kanye West's mom stories about her surgeon...I just want to be sure! LOL

Hi there - I live in Keller and was banded 4 weeks ago by Dr. Marsden. I went to the surgery center in Hurst (right off Harwood and Precinct Line Rd). I arrived at Dr. Marsden via "Lap Band Solutions" (Lap-Band Weight Loss Surgery Solutions)

My experience there was great, and Dr. Marsden was great. It's funny, I didn't have much interaction with Dr. Marsden himself, but, his staff is wonderful. The nurses are the ones who calm your nerves, talk you through all the fears and help with all the anxiety. I'm a BIG BIG chicken when it comes to anything medical (I don't even watch ER or Grey's Anatomy!). Anyway, just thought you might like another option, or another doctor to consider. His staff is wonderful, they were all banded and are soooo nice to deal with. I don't care if the doctor himself has a great personality, as long as he can perform surgery and do it right! haha!

Here's Dr. Marsden's info:

The one of the top LAP-BAND® surgeon in DFW , John Marsden, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a native of Mineral Wells, Texas. He attended Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth, graduating with highest honors with a degree in Biology and Chemistry. He then completed his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. As a senior medical student, due to placing in the top of his class, Dr. Marsden was able to obtain surgical externships at Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, St. Paul Hospital in Dallas, and Breckenridge Hospital in Austin. Dr. Marsden went on to complete his surgical training at Texas A&M University hospitals in Temple, Texas, where he distinguished himself by being named chief surgical resident his 5th year.

After successfully obtaining board certification by the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Marsden completed a prestigious Cardiovascular Fellowship with the world renowned heart surgeon, Dr. Michael E. Debakey in Houston, Texas. Dr. Marsden then moved to North Texas and began a private surgical practice.

Dr. Marsden was first certified in laparoscopic surgery in 1990 and has performed over 2000 laparoscopic procedures. He has performed surgery in multiple cities including Houston and Dallas. Currently, Dr. Marsden performs the lap band surgery at the Specialty Surgery Center in Hurst.

Dr. Marsden is a member of countless medical societies including The American Medical Association, The Southwestern Surgical Congress, The American Society of Endovascular Surgery, The American Society of Gastric Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.

I got my band from Dr. Smith on 10/25. My pcp had given me 3 names-Dr. Sewell, Dr. Kim and Dr. Smith. I did some research and went to Dr. Smith's seminar because it was the 1st available. After the seminar I didnn't look any further. I really liked him and the fact that he had the band himself.

My experiences with him and his office have been very good so far. 1st fill scheduled 11/29 with Ferrera (haven't met him yet).

I can't compare him with others because it was the only seminar I went to but I don't know what I would want done any differently than Dr. Smith has done so far.

Appts seem to be no problem and his office staff is very helpful. Also they are available by email which I like as an alternative to making phone calls.

Whichever doc you choose - good luck to you!

I was banded by Dr. Smith on 10/24 and have lost 17 lbs. so far. I love everyone in his office and they get you in and out in such a timely manner. I go for my first fill on the Tues after Thanksgiving. I did alot of research before I chose my Dr. but picked Dr. Smith because he is also a lap band patient Dr. Ferrera did Dr. Smith's. Also one of the psych Dr.'s and one of the nurses in his office also had their lap band done by Dr. Smith. I found out recently a lady at my church got her lap band by Dr. Smith last yr. He or his staff have answered any and all my questions and been very helpful. Would highly recommend him and LBS.

This is where I had my surgery but was cash pay for the entire surgery. I would think that they would have you pay before the procedure would be done.

Y has it taken a year for you to have your surgery? Just curious - I am also using Dr. Smith and I was denied and two and 1/2 weeks ago completed my 6 months of physician checks - now I am waiting for them to re-submit. Did you feel the doctor's office took alot of time to process?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play, and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
