How long did you cover your incisions?

Recommended Posts

I found many posts about incisions but no had had talked about how long they covered them for. I am 8 days out of surgery and my post op instructions say to cover for a week, but my drainage incision still looks pretty open... I got my surgery out of the country so I don't have a doctor that can look at them in person. I will email my surgeon who did the procedure but I wanted some more insight. Thank you.

I was told to cover mine until they were scabbed and dry, so removed mine around 5 days post op. If your incisions are not healed then I'd keep them covered, the last thing you want is any germs getting in there. Hopefully your surgeon can offer you some advice soon x

My only incision was in my belly button. Self dissolving stitches and some sort of glue that formed a sort of "plug". It started to fake away about 10 days later and completely fell off in about 2-3 weeks.

Mine were never covered, just had glue on them but my mom's were covered (she had hers somewhere else) and they told her to leave it as long as she could.

I never covered mine. Mine had surgical glue over them. I was just told to not rub them while in the shower and to just let the soapy Water flow over them.. they eventually fell off by themselves.

I had the glue--so same here (no covering). However, this week the big incision over my belly button started to bleed (6 weeks post-op) from the right edge after rubbing against a shirt when I was at the gym. It was the kind of bleeding you get when you cut yourself shaving--looks worse than it is. I cleaned the area well, put some anti-bacterial cream on it and covered it with a bandage. Now, I put a bandage over the areas when ever I work out. It takes a while for the big wound to fully heal apparently.

Mine were never covered. They were glued together and had steri-strips over them (like tape). I was told to keep them clean/dry and no baths or swimming until the strips fell off.

If your incision looks open, you probably need to consult a doctor. good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
