Hi everyone!

I am banded a week today and am still feeling really bloated and some residual pain in my left shoulder. However, yesterday I tried to go to my business and do some paperwork and found that I could not sit without pain. The pain was directly under my breasts at the top of my stomach. However, after time the pain became concentrated on my right side. It was sort of like a sharp pain you get in your side and when you take a breath it is really uncomfortable. So last night I took pain meds put a heating pad on it and chocked it up to stubborn gas pain. I went to bed and had an uncomfortable night sleeping because the stabbing pain in on my right side. When I press on my right side it hurts under the skin but enough away from the port to not lead me to believe it is the port. Also, I have had not had a bowel movement in 7 days. Today, I had a litte movement but it was difficult. As directed by my doctor, I have been taking liquid Colace but man that stuff hasn't kicked in at all.

Today, I woke up feeling pretty cruddy for day 7. However, I started to feel better and got some work done (God knows that I need to...I own my own business). However, this evening this pain came back. I am gurgling quite a bit and feel the gas moving around but I am concerned about the sharp pain on my right side. I am going to call my doctor tomorrow because I think that I should be feeling much better by now. I have been eating just fine. As a matter of fact, my hunger has come back full force and I had my most difficult time with hunger today.

Just thought I would check with you all and see if anyone as experienced this and offer up some advice until I talk with the Doc tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Holleyberries,

I'm exactly a week postop today too. I've been having the exact same symptoms you're describing except on the left side. My right side (port side) is just tender because of the work they did there but I have the sharp pains you describe and the shoulder pain. The shoulder pain started the next morning after my surgery. The nurse and doc told me it's just the gas they use to blow you up for surgery. Since it can't escape, it migrates up in your body until it dissipates. I think the sharp pains that are lower are just gas pains.... taking the chewable gasX has help me with that alot and I'm feeling much better, but it hasn't gone away totally. I'm going to ask my doc about it on Thursday when I see him.

Langleygirl, let me know what your Doc says. I would be curious. I don't have a post op appointment with the Doc until 11/29. I kind of think that is long time not to see the Doc for a post op appt. don't you?

The other thing that has been tough is figuring out the full feeling from the bloating feeling.

That is a long time to wait for an appt. with the doc. Mine wanted me back 7-10 days after surgery.... no exceptions. I'll definately let you know on Thursday what he says. I'm still trying to figure out the gas vs. hunger pain thing. I started taking gasX yesterday and that has really helped. Before I'd be so bloated thinking I was full but my stomach would be rumbling like crazy and I'd think I was starving. When in doubt....drink Water, lol, it helps a little bit.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
